How to Enable XP Mode in Windows 7 Using Microsoft Virtual PC

Part of the problem with the release of Windows Vista is that many applications (especially corporate applications) simply don’t work. In an effort to encourage the use of Windows 7, Microsoft developed XP Mode. XP Mode allows applications that run in Windows XP to run alongside Windows 7 applications. Unfortunately, this feature is only available for Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate Editions of Windows 7.

XP mode can also be used to run different versions of the same application side-by-side. As a web developer, this allows me to run IE8 (running in Windows 7) and IE6/IE7 (running in XP Mode) side-by-side to test website compatibility.

Let’s see how to install and get started with XP Mode in Windows 7.

Part One: Download XP Mode and Virtual PC

Step 1. Navigate to the Windows XP Mode and Virtual PC download page, and then select the Windows 7 version and desired language to install. If you’re not sure which version of Windows 7 you’re running, follow our guide to find out.
