As a result, we have many Samsung apps like Dialer, Samsung Internet, Contacts, Gallery, Samsung Notes and others that compete directly with the built-in Google apps. Another addition to the growing list is Samsung Free which aims to replace the default Google Discover experience on Galaxy devices. Not a fan of Samsung’s recent add-on? You can easily turn off Samsung Free on your Samsung Galaxy phone.
We’ve seen Android manufacturers replace the Google Feed UI to match a custom Android skin and promote their services. Samsung is no exception here. With One UI, the company will add Samsung Free by default on the left home screen on millions of Android phones.
Before you disable it, learn a little bit about what Samsung Free is, what features it offers, and what the alternatives are.
What is Samsung Free?
Samsung Free is Samsung’s answer to the growing popularity of Google Discover. The company used to use Flipboard in the TouchWiz days but now it’s reverting to its in-house solution with Samsung Free.
Samsung Free brings Live TV channels, News integration and Samsung Play to install Games right from the home screen. Swipe right from the home screen and you can access all three from one menu.
Why you should disable Samsung for free
There are many reasons why Samsung Free might annoy you and you end up having to disable it on your phone.
The Live TV function is only available in certain countries around the world. Depending on your current location, you may find it unhelpful.
Samsung Free’s News section is not inferior to Google Discover’s high-performance and premium news algorithms.
Samsung Play is nothing more than another attempt to get consumers to download partner apps and games on their phones.
The current Samsung Free performance leaves a lot to be desired. Loading time was more than what we wanted.
Samsung doesn’t seem to use any AI to recommend articles. You may be left with irrelevant news recommendations.
Samsung Free seems to be most useful when your area has a lot of live TV channels that support it and you’re using a Samsung TV to stream content. It’s perfect to start casting from Samsung phone to Samsung TV.
Disable Samsung for free on Samsung phones
Now that you have enough reasons to turn off Samsung Free, here are the steps to turn it off.
Step 1: Unlock your Samsung phone and access the Samsung One UI home screen.
Step 2: Long press on home screen and swipe right.
Step 3: You have an option to turn off Samsung Free.
Turn it off and enjoy your One UI experience without Samsung Free.
Replace Samsung Free with Google Discover
With the One UI 3.1 update, Samsung gives users the option to change from Samsung Free to Google Discover.
Step 1: Unlock your Samsung phone and access the Samsung One UI home screen.
Step 2: Long press on home screen and swipe right.
Step 3: Select Google Discover and return to the main screen.
That’s it. From now on, you will see the Google Discover menu instead of Samsung Free on Samsung Galaxy phones. But there is a downside.
The option to change from Samsung Free to Google Discover is only available on Galaxy phones that launch with One UI 3.1 or later. So, if your current Galaxy phone is updated from the old One UI version to One UI 3.1 software, you won’t have the same option as shown in the screenshot above.
For older One UI phones, we have another solution for you.
Use a Third-Party Android Launcher
The Google Play Store is filled with third-party Android launchers that offer Google Discover integration.
Some popular names include Nova launcher and Action launcher. Using them, you can get rid of Samsung Free and replace it with the Google Discover menu.
We used the Nova launcher here because it is more popular than its competition.
First, you need to download Nova Launcher from the Play Store and install it.
Now go to APKMirror and download the Nova Google Now Companion app. The Google Discover menu inside the Nova launcher needs to be enabled. Go to the Nova Launcher Settings menu and enable the Google Discover toggle from the Google Discover menu.
You’re ready to enjoy Google Discover with all the Nova features on your Galaxy phone.
Remove Samsung for free from Samsung phones
There is no direct way to remove or completely remove Samsung Free from Galaxy phones. You can just turn it off or replace the current setup with Google Discover. Whether you like Samsung Free or not, the fact that you can disable it, should put you at ease.
