Any changes you make on the hard disk (like copying, pasting, deleting, saving files) lead to disk fragmentation. The modified file is stored in a separate segment on the hard disk other than the original file location. Over time, this can slow down your computer as it looks in different places to open files.
Defraggler is a free utility that gives you various options to defragment your hard disk. And it’s better than Windows’ native defrag tool. Check out this program’s snapshot below. You can see that it provides all the details of the drives on your computer. You can click the analyze button to know about the current status of the drive.
Go to Help > Drive Map Annotation. You can check the meaning of each color.
When you hover your mouse pointer over the blocks, it will show the number of files contained in the block.
Click the Defrag button to start the defragmentation process. You can see the progress in Status part.
Go to Settings > Preferences. Here you will find a lot of options. You can also schedule defragmentation to happen at a specific time on a daily, weekly or monthly basis.
You can exclude some files from being fragmented. It can be done by drive, folder, file or file type.
Note: During the defragmentation process, your computer will slow down. Also, this tool is better than Windows’ inbuilt defrag tool because it gives you more options. You can defrag the entire hard drive or just some files (sort files by size).
