How to Clean Up Your Google Photos Backup

After reading the title, you may have one question and that is, why should I try to clean a room (metaphorically) with unlimited storage space? Well, the answer is in the question itself. You can keep anything and everything in the room, but you still only keep the relevant stuff and other things just move to the attic, the backyard, or even the trash. This way you have clear access to the photos you want at the right time.

More is less, the same principle applies to Google Photos backups. Either way, you can upload unlimited photos to the server, but cleaning things up from time to time can ensure you a smoother user experience.

So, in today’s post, I’ll show you how you can make sure the photos you back up to Google are clean, and then talk about some usage tips so you can delete your previously uploaded junk.

Disable 3rd party photo folders for backup

Google Photos for Android provides a nice way using which users can control which folders of photos will be uploaded to Google Photos. To review your selection, open the Google Photos app, then tap the hamburger menu in the top left to open the sidebar. Here, tap the option device folder and it will show you all the folders on your device that have photos in them.

Next to each folder there will be a cloud icon. If it is blue, it means the photos from that folder are being uploaded to the server and a white cloud with a strike means the opposite. So to include or exclude a folder from an upload, you can simply tap the cloud and toggle the exact status you need.

That way, you can make sure no unnecessary folders like screenshots and WhatsApp media files are uploaded to Google Photos.

So that handles damage control. Now, what if you already have those photos on Google Photos and you want to delete it? Well, if you remember, we wrote an article about how awesome the search feature on Google Photo is, and we’ll use that to get the job done.

Delete uploaded bad photos

So let’s deal with the screenshot first. As you probably know, screenshots on most phones are stored in PNG format and the format in which they are uploaded. So you can tell us the keyword Screenshots or *.png to get all the screenshots you have on Google Photos.

Once you have all the screenshots, just use the multiple selected options to mark up and delete them. Once the photos are deleted, they are moved to the trash from where they are automatically deleted after 60 days, if not done manually.

I noticed that the keyword WhatsApp while used as a search term gives all the photos that have been uploaded from the WhatsApp folder. These photos can be a combination of all the useless WhatsApp forwards and some useful photos shared by your contacts. Yes, you have some manual work here, but you can combine it with keywords like Letter And Dark to get forward-quoted or poorly lit and/or blurred photos.

This process is still a work in progress, and since Google hasn’t set out any specific keywords you can search for on Google Photos, it’s only left to trial and error. If I find anything interesting, I’ll mention it in the comments, but promise me you will too if you’re lucky to find something.

Cool Tip: Did you know that you can free up space in your Phone’s internal memory by deleting what has been uploaded on the Google Photo servers? Just open Google Photos settings and select the option, Free up device storage.

This option will take some time to analyze the photo and then give you the option to free up GB of space with a single tap.
