How to Annotate PDFs in Notes App on iPhone and Mac

There are multiple ways to share a PDF file from your iPhone and Mac. The Files app is the default app for opening PDF files. But with the new software updates for iPhone (iOS 17) and Mac (macOS Sonoma), you can now open and annotate PDFs in the Apple Notes app.

In this post, we will share the steps to annotate PDFs in the Notes app on your iPhone and Mac. For this post, we have installed the Public Beta versions of iOS 17 and macOS Sonoma. However, this feature will be made available after the stable releases in September this year.

How to Annotate PDF Files on iPhone

If you prefer sharing PDF files straight from your iPhone, here’s how to use Apple Notes to markup your PDF files. The Notes app also allows you to add information about the PDF file and share the note with your contacts. If you use the Notes app on your iPad, you can start using the PDF annotation feature with your Apple Pencil.

Here’s how to open and annotate PDF files in the Notes app on your iPhone.

Step 1: Open the Files app on your iPhone.

Step 2: Long-press the PDF file icon and tap on Copy.

Step 3: Close Files and open the Notes app on your iPhone.

Step 4: Open your note and long-press to paste your PDF file.

Step 5: After you add the PDF file to your note, tap the Markup icon at the bottom Menu Bar.

You will see different options to annotate your PDF file like using a marker, pencil, pen, and eraser.

If you tap the Plus icon at the bottom-right corner, you will see the options to add a Sticker, Signature, Text, and Shape to your PDF file for annotation purposes.

Step 6: After you annotate your PDF file, tap on Done at the top-right corner to save it.

Use PDF Annotation With Quick Look on iPhone

Alternatively, you can use the Quick Look feature to annotate your PDF files in the Notes app on your iPhone. Here’s how.

Step 1: Open the PDF files in the Notes app on your iPhone.

Step 4: In the Quick Look window, you can annotate your PDF file using the same tools. Just tap the Markup icon at the bottom.

How to Annotate PDF Files on Mac

Just like on iPhone, you can annotate your PDF file using the Notes app on your Mac. If there is something that you want to highlight in a PDF document, you can add annotations using the Notes app. Here’s how.

Step 1: Select the PDF file icon and press Command + C keyboard shortcut to copy it.

Step 2: Press Command + Spacebar keyboard shortcut to open Spotlight Search, type Notes, and press Return.

Step 3: Open your note and press Command + V keyboard shortcut to paste the file.

Step 4: After your PDF is attached to the note, click the arrow icon next to the name of your PDF file.

Step 5: Click on Quick Look.

Step 6: In the Markup window, you will now see all the tools you can use to add annotations to your PDF file.

You can scroll between pages and keep adding your annotations wherever required.

Step 7: After adding your annotations, click on Done at the top-right corner to save them.

The macOS will save your annotated PDF in the Notes app.
