Google Slides is often the top choice for education, startups, and small businesses. Although this PowerPoint competitor is free, it comes with many built-in templates, perfect sharing, it works on all platforms, and comes with a long list of features. However, you can also add music to a Google Slides presentation.
Presentations are boring, but audio clips make them easier to focus on. You want to make the perfect impression on your boss, investor, or classroom teacher with relevant and informative audio clips on Slides. Read on to learn tips on adding audio to Google Slides.
Note: You can only add audio files to Google Slides using a desktop computer. There is no way to do so using a mobile device.
Method 1: Add Audio to Google Slides via Google Drive
You must upload an audio file to your Google Drive account before you can add it to your Slides presentation. Once done, you can use the Google Drive web or mobile app to complete the upload.
To be clear, we’ve broken the steps into three parts – save the audio to Drive, then insert the audio into the presentation, then customize the music. Let’s get started.
Part 1: Save audio in Google Drive
You cannot record audio directly in Google Slides. However, you can use your phone’s built-in recording app to record audio. The Google Recorder app on Android has features like auto-recording, audio search, and offline use. If you want to extract audio from videos on your Windows PC, read our dedicated post. Once you have an audio file ready, upload it to Google Drive.
Step 1: Open the Google Drive app on your Android phone.
Step 2: Press + in the bottom right corner and select ‘Upload’.
Step 3: Select and upload an audio file from the phone memory.
If you use Google Drive on the desktop, simply drag and drop an audio file from the Finder (Mac) or File Explorer (Windows) to your Drive account. Now let’s add audio to Google Slides.
Part 2: Insert audio into Google Slides
First, we recommend that you start your Google Slides presentation with one of the available templates. You can start from scratch, but the relevant template will let you get the job done faster.
Google Slides supports MP3 and WAV audio formats. We tried our luck with MP4 but ran into errors during the process. Now, follow the steps below to add an audio clip to a Google Slides presentation.
Step 1: Go to Google Slides on the web and open the presentation you want to edit.
Step 2: From the left sidebar, select the slide to which you want to add audio.
Step 3: Click the Insert option in the menu bar and select Audio.
Step 4: The following menu will open Google Drive Home. Select the relevant audio file you want to insert.
Step 5: Hit the Select button at the bottom and you’ll see the audio track right in the Slides.
Before finalizing the presentation, you need to review the customization options. Let’s look at them.
Part 3: Customize Google Slides Audio
In Google Slides, there are some basic audio adjustments. The formatting options on the toolbar appear when you select the audio file.
1. Auto play sound
From the first autoplay option you can start playing the sound with one click or automatically. We mostly prefer automatic because you don’t have to click the Play button to start the audio during a presentation. Google Slides also offers the option to hide icons when presenting.
2. Size and Rotation
This is self explanatory. Using the Size and rotate menu, you can change the width, height, and height ratio of the Play button.
3. Recolor
One can easily change the color background of the Play button using the change color menu. You can choose from up to 23 available color themes. This isn’t required, but using a color profile that matches the overall theme of your Slide can demonstrate your attention to detail as a presenter.
4. Adjustment
This is just Google having fun with a bunch of options. You can change the Play button’s transparency, brightness, and contrast from the Adjust menu in Slides.
5. Drop shadow
This is a favorite of the GT team. You can give the play button a nice professional look with just one click. Activate the shader option from the side menu bar to see the change immediately.
You can also adjust the shadow’s transparency, angle, distance, and opacity radius.
Method 2: Add audio from music streaming service to Google Slides
Whether you use Apple Music, Amazon Music, Spotify, YouTube Music, or SoundCloud, it’s pretty easy to add tracks from your favorite streaming service to Google Slides. Let’s take Spotify and SoundCloud as examples here.
Insert audio from Spotify into Google Slides
Step 1: Open a presentation in Google Slides. Select a text and click Insert at the top.
Step 2: Select Link.
Step 3: Go to Spotify on the web or open the desktop app. Click the three-dot menu next to a song.
Step 4: Expand Share and copy the song link.
Step 5: Insert the same content into your presentation and press Apply.
However, unlike your local audio file, Spotify will not play tracks in your presentation. It will open the Spotify website to play the audio.
Add Sound from SoundCloud to Google Slides
Step 1: Open SoundCloud on your browser and select a track you want to add to Google Slides. Click Share.
Step 2: Copy the song link.
Step 3: Open Google Slides, select the slide and click on the text or icon.
Step 4: Select Insert > Link.
Step 5: Paste the SoundCloud link and press Apply.
The slide will open a new tab with the SoundCloud track when you click the link. You can minimize the window and continue with your presentation.
Method 3: Add YouTube videos to Google Slides
Integrating relevant YouTube videos into Google Slides can further enhance the overall presentation’s appeal. YouTube’s integration with Google Slides is also seamless. There are two ways to add YouTube videos to Google Slides. Let’s explore both step by step.
1. Embed YouTube Videos
Step 1: In Google Slides, open the slide where you want to add the YouTube video.
Step 2: Click Insert on the menu bar and select Video.
Step 3: The following menu will provide a YouTube search bar to find related videos.
Step 4: Enter the YouTube video or channel name and select it to add to Google Slides.
Like Audio, you have many options like size, position, shading, and rotation to customize the look and feel of your video and make adjustments on Slides.
2. Add YouTube videos via URL
You can easily insert a video into your Slides presentation if you have a YouTube URL.
Step 1: Open one of your presentations in Google Slides, click Insert in the menu, and select Video.
Step 2: Scroll to the ‘By URL’ tab.
Step 3: Paste the URL and check the video preview.
Step 4: Click ‘Select’ to add it to your slide.
Create a memorable presentation
Google Slides is the de facto tool for many people when it comes to online presentations. And music can be a great way to help bring your presentations to life and completely immerse your audience in your message. Follow the steps above and add audio to your next Google Slides presentation.
