Apple’s iOS 15 brings a number of features to improve the iPhone user experience. These include visual changes in Safari and better notification management through Focus Mode, which has been missing on iOS for a long time. In addition to these changes, Apple buried some important features in the Settings menu in iOS 15 like adding legacy Contacts.
Legacy contacts carry details about who can access the data on your iPhone after your death. It could be a family member or a close friend you trust. It is quite similar to a candidate that you add to a bank account.
Here’s how you can add Legacy Contacts on your iPhone and give them access to your iCloud data after you pass away.
What data can a legacy contact access
A legacy contact can access your iPhone data synced to iCloud. This includes your installed apps, photos, videos, files, notes, contacts, messages, call logs, and calendar events. However, the person cannot access the passwords stored in iCloud Keychain. Additionally, licensed media purchased through services such as iTunes will not be accessible.
You can only set up legacy contacts on your iPhone when you feel comfortable sharing information and data after your death.
How to add a legacy contact from your iPhone
Before you begin, make sure your iPhone software runs iOS 15 or later. This feature is only available from iOS 15 onwards. So if you have an older iPhone that doesn’t support the iOS version, you can’t add legacy contacts.
Step 1: Open ‘Settings; app on your iPhone. Tap your name displayed at the top of the screen.
Step 2: Select the ‘Password & Security’ option in your Apple ID.
Step 3: Scroll down until you find the ‘Legacy Contact’ option. Touch it.
Step 4: Now tap on the ‘Add legacy contact’ option. Also note that if someone has added you as their legacy contact, you’ll be able to see that contact on this screen.
Step 5: Select ‘Add Legacy Contact’ again after reading through the information displayed.
Step 6: You can now select a contact that you want to add as a legacy contact from your contacts. Once you’ve selected a contact, tap their phone number or email ID to choose where to get the secret key. Then select ‘Continue.’ Legacy contacts you add will show up on your iPhone and other devices connected to the same Apple ID.
Step 7: You can choose from two options to share the secret access key with the contact. You can send it to the person you’ve chosen as a Legacy Contact via iMessage, which will automatically store the key on their device. Or, you can choose to get a physical printout for handover.
Step 8: On the ‘Added legacy contact’ screen, you will find an option to update your date of birth. Select that option if you haven’t set your date of birth on your iCloud account, or if it’s incorrect. If it’s set correctly, tap ‘Done’.
To add more legacy contacts, repeat the whole process again. Selecting a legacy contact gives you the option to view their access key and remove that person as a legacy contact. You can print the access key and keep it in a safe place. It contains a QR code with a unique 88-character key that unlocks your data.
How to access iCloud data as legacy contacts
Adding someone as a legacy contact doesn’t mean they can access your data whenever they want. Contacts must follow certain steps before they can access iCloud data. This is the procedure.
Step 1: Go to Apple’s Digital Heritage Portal and select ‘Request Access’. Sign in with your Apple ID when prompted.
Step 2: Enter the first 32 characters of the access key, then you will be asked to upload a copy of the deceased’s death certificate. You will also have to verify your date of birth before granting access.
Step 3: Once verified, you can access the relevant data on iCloud or even download a copy if you want to store and view it later.
Let your legacy continue
By setting up legacy contacts, you can give people access to important data and share the memories of your life with family and close friends. In addition, in your absence, the legacy contact will be useful to prove that a particular device belongs to you.
