Commentary on the poem Do Len by Nguyen Duy – Sample song
In human life, perhaps childhood is the purest and most beautiful time. There are peaceful childhoods, there are also intense childhoods, but no matter what, when we cannot return, each of us still has moments of nostalgia full of regret. Xuan Quynh loved her nest of eggs, Te Hanh khô missed her hometown river, Bang Viet returned to the fire of love… and Nguyen Duy was busy looking for a Do Len when he heard a fairy tale.
Along with Vietnamese bamboo, Sitting sad to miss my mother sita, Moonlight… Do Len is a poem that many readers love because of the sincere feelings of love that the writer has naturally spread in it. The poem consists of six stanzas. The first two stanzas are memories of childhood with childhood games. The next two stanzas are the perception and feelings of the lyrical character about the silent sacrifices of the grandmother. The fifth stanza is the memory of a day when American bombs destroyed houses and temples. And the last stanza is the sad mood of my character when my grandmother is no more. Throughout the work is a grandson’s deep love for his grandmother. The poem begins with a line of nostalgia, with recollections of distant times:
When I was a child, I went to Cong Na to fish
hold her dress to go to Binh Lam market
catch the sparrow at the ear of the Buddha statue
and sometimes steal Tran pagoda
When I was young, I went to visit Cay Thi temple
Walking barefoot at night to see the Song Temple ceremony
The scent of white lily blends well with the incense
The song staggers the shadow of the co dong
The two childhood words at the beginning of the text, which are repeated again in the second stanza, are not only a time stamp but also filled with pity. The subject of point of view in the poem is the character I – but not the me of childhood, but the evening when I grew up and matured. That’s why so many memories came flooding back, but all were called names in a hurry: fishing, grabbing her skirt to go to the market, catching sparrows, stealing longan, playing at Cay Thi Temple, watching the margins of Song Temple.
Country boy’s games are listed with dense levels. All these games allow us to imagine a mischievous, hyperactive kid. It is worth mentioning that his memories are not associated with his friends of the same age, but always with his grandmother. My grandmother only appeared in the act of going to Binh Lam market, but it seemed that her footsteps always followed the memories of her grandchildren, Children – especially boys – still like to wander in gardens and ponds. but my character’s destination is temples, markets – where old women often go. Nguyen Duy mentioned five places, among them there are three names of pagodas and temples. Tran Pagoda, Song Temple, and Cay Thi Temple were also the places the boy followed, of course, not to pay homage to Buddha like her, but to discover many interesting things there. Maybe when I was a kid, my character was just busy with his mischief, and even would be scolded by his grandmother for his actions of catching sparrows in the ear of the Buddha statue, stealing the label of Tran pagoda. But then all that is deposited in the memory is the smell of white lily mixed with deep smoke and the song of poetry and the silhouette of the sorceress in the temple. Now we understand why the author didn’t use a specific description of a game. The scent of purity, the serenity of the place, and the puzzling melodious song are all filled with nostalgia for the lyrical character. What is subtly, even unintentionally, retained by children in memory has the strongest staying power when the memory reverberates. What is the root cause? Is it because in the smoke, the fragrant aroma and the old song is the silhouette of my character’s beloved grandmother? In the next stanza, the quartet has a sudden change. No longer childish mischiefs, but unbridled love:
I didn’t know my grandmother was so desperate
Mrs. fetching crabs and shrimps in Dong Quan
She went to take care of the green cover of three Camps
Wok restaurant, Dong Giao is full of cold nights
The line of nostalgia does not stop at childhood games, but is followed by the image of a busy grandmother. I don’t know – it’s not really a confession but it’s a regretful, pitiful self-reproach of the grandson as an adult. All that was hidden in childhood is now clearly realized. It’s still a list operation, but it’s not a childhood game but her hardships and hardships. In fact, finding crabs, shoveling shrimp, carrying cover… are familiar things for rural women in Vietnam. If anyone has read the verses of Tran Dang Khoa, they will surely love her figure and mother’s figure at noon in June:
Water as someone cooks
Even the sailfish die
The crabs come ashore
My mother went down to plant
If anyone has read The other side of the Duong River by Hoang Cam, they will see a similarity between Hoang Cam and Nguyen Duy in the poetic image:
An old and frail mother carrying peddlers
Pieces of dried areca
Bottles of pink products
A few sheets of paper in the morning dew
Those hardships should not be in the grandmothers who have gone through so much hardship in life, should not be at the age where they should be relaxed and happy with their children and grandchildren. Once again Nguyen Duy allowed landmarks to appear, but these were no longer sacred temples. Ba Trai, Dong Quan, Quan Chao, Dong Giao are the places where the grandmother’s footprints were born early in the morning. Space follows space, expanding and prolonging her journey of flooding and deepening the sadness in her heart. Words of the cross are erected in front of the reader’s eyes, the unsteady, even crooked gait of people with poor eyesight who are carrying a burden on their shoulders. The phrase soldering nights has both time and spatial value. Night is a time later than dark. Also to refer to the cold, but Nguyen Duy did not write cold nights, cold nights, but cold nights. This ingenious word combination yields an unexpected artistic effect. In the cold of the night. We can also feel the frost of the night dew. The hardships of the shadowy figure are not described in detail but are still evoked in the reader’s mind. Aren’t those silent sacrifices?
The lyrical character doesn’t seem to dare to believe what he realizes, dare not believe in the things he didn’t feel when he was a child. The feeling of the grandmother and the deep memories of the fairy Buddhas made the poet wonder:
I am transparent between the broken shores – real
Between my grandmother and the divine fairy god
The year of hunger and boiled galangal tubers
Just listen to the scent of white lily and incense
This is probably the best stanza of the poem. Or by the way he speaks and is touched by the depth of his feelings. Transparent is an adjective indicating the nature of things and phenomena introduced by Nguyen Duy in the poem, taking on the function of modal verbs. It is difficult to accurately name the feelings of the lyrical character. Only one thing can be confirmed, this state is close to the moment of enlightenment of Buddhist monks. Her image is placed in an equal position with the Buddha, the god, expressing the admiration and devotion of my character. It is necessary to really appreciate and appreciate her gratitude, the lyrical character has such deep and intense feelings. That sentiment is placed in the opposition between two spaces: the mundane space and the pure land space. The feeling of hunger is drowned out by the scent of white tuberose and pure incense. The second time that fragrance appears in the poem.
But this time it was not sensed by smell but by hearing. The subtlety of the poetic idea is here. If it’s just a faint smell or just a smell, the white lily and incense are just the scents of the present. That is not to mention the use of words will lose the elegant taste of poetic images and words. You have to listen to see the past echoing, then you can see the haunting power of the scent of the past. The sense of her is always associated with elegance, kindness, and virtue. She is like a fairy, she is like a fairy and she is always immortal in my mind.
The fourth stanza is a hinge that closes the childhood memories and comes closer to the actual loss described in the fifth stanza:
American bombs blew away my grandmother’s house
Temple of the Bay, fly all the temples
Where do saints and Buddhas invite each other?
My grandmother sells eggs at Len station
War with pain and loss has entered poetry and become a theme throughout an era. Each entered the war and came out with its own loss. For Nguyen Duy, the most painful thing is the destruction and ruin of temples and grandmother’s house. The poet has chosen to speak in order to hold back the mental trauma. Not depicting masterpieces and deserted alleys like Hoang Cam, Nguyen Duy just gently told: My grandmother’s house flew away, Song temple flew, all temples flew. Flying is actually melting, falling into ruin. Flying velvet is also associated with the sense of fairy and Buddha. Peaceful places are no longer peaceful. The fierceness of war imprints itself on the lives of fairies, let alone humans? The end of the memories is the image of the grandmother selling eggs at Len station despite the American bombs, even though Saint and Buddha had to go together. Will she still have her life intact to make a living or will it be the beginning of an unforeseen misfortune, an endless loss? Ga Len is the ending point of the verse but was chosen as the title of the poem, which proves that this place is associated with an important event. Is it right here that the days of being attached to the poet’s beloved grandmother – the lyrical character also end?
As time went by, when she became an adult, she realized her great sacrifices, became aware of her feelings and responsibilities, and the lyrical character lost her forever. The last two sentences are not special about the four poems, but they are touching in the hearts of the readers. She was just a mushroom – the poem sounded full of sadness and regret.
Do Len is a poem that is not new on the topic but still has a special appeal thanks to its unique expression, thanks to the expression of sincere love of the writer. Her love is always associated with the feeling of temples, fairies, and Buddhas, so they have pure and bright colors. A series of landmarks of the homeland are named, highlighting the authenticity in emotions. Those are the unique and unique features to read Do Len, we are not confused with Remember the hometown river of Te Hanh khô, Fire stove of Bang Viet…

Those are the unique and unique features to read Do Len, we are not confused with Remember the hometown river of Te Hanh, Fire stove of Bang Viet…
