What Will Be the Different Windows 8 Versions for Consumers

will end very soon. The Windows team recently announced the versions of Windows 8 that will be available.

Although the post reveals three versions, I feel there is some ambiguity in it.

This is because, Brandon LeBlanc named them Windows 8, Windows 8 Pro and Windows RT. Now, where is the third version? Windows RT is all about ARM devices, there’s no 8 in it and won’t be available as a standalone package.

This single version will only be pre-installed on PCs and tablets powered by ARM processors and will help enable new thin and light form factors with impressive battery life. Windows RT will include touch-optimized desktop versions of the new Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNoteis what the post says.

So people like you and I will really have two products to choose from. Unlike Windows 7, they have trimmed down the options for users to choose.. good or bad? However, it does feature user flexibility to switch between touchscreen or keyboard and mouse, which means it will support a wide range of devices.

Another thing to note is that you won’t be able to upgrade from Windows XP or Windows Vista. However, you can upgrade Windows 7 (Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Professional and/or Ultimate) to Windows Pro. Others will need to purchase a new package.

As standard, Windows 8 is aimed at the general consumer and Windows 8 Pro is for business. “Windows 8 Pro is designed to help tech enthusiasts and business/technical professionals get a richer set of Windows 8 technologies.” added Blanc. However, I recommend taking a personal stance based on your requirements.

MS Office is not yet integrated (although Windows RT has it) while all variants will be allowed to download apps from the Windows Store. Besides, “Windows Media Center will be available as an economical “media pack” add-on for Windows 8 Pro“, Microsoft describes. Most of us have heard and read about the new Windows Explorer, the Metro Interface, a better Task Manager, and simplified multi-monitor support. In addition, Windows 8 offers the same language switching capabilities as on Enterprise/Ultimate before. But then, it’s not pleasant to read, “For China and a select subset of emerging markets, we will offer local language-only versions of Windows 8“.

Let’s see what the comparison table from the Windows Blog says.

Conclusion

I think overall, it’s good that Microsoft decided to get rid of the messy Windows version names and simplify it to the point where the average consumer understands what they should or can buy and what they shouldn’t.

Some people may think this is another act of copying Apple, because Apple has always had two versions of OS X operating system – one for consumers and one for businesses. But then there’s no harm in copying your competitors’ good practices, right?
