Notice is both a cause and a benefit. On the one hand, they can be distracting. But on the other hand, some urgent messages need your immediate attention. While the Spotlight setting helps you balance the situation, it’s the Spotlight state that’s the real breakthrough. Plus, you can even share Focus status on your iPhone with your contacts.
If you like walking into an area while working or don’t like office alerts that interfere with your personal time, then Focus on Apple devices is the right solution. And while you’re focused on the current task, Spotlight status can notify others that you’re not available. Now, how exactly does it do it? Move on to the next section.

As the name suggests, the setting shares your Spotlight status with others trying to connect with you when your iPhone is in Spotlight mode. However, there are currently a limited number of apps that support this feature.
For now, this feature is limited to apps with contact notifications like Messages. And even though Apple provides the Focus State API, not many developers have adopted it yet. So, more or less, you’re stuck with Apple’s native Messages app, and that app is only for iMessage users, too.
What about privacy?
It’s Apple, what do you expect? When you share a status, others only see that you have muted notifications, but not what Spotlight is active on your device.
Also, you don’t have to share it with everyone, you can choose who can see it. So intimate details remain between you and your device.
Now that everything is in order, let’s see how to enable Spotlight status and manage different aspects of the feature.
How to enable Focused Status Sharing on iPhone
Step 1: Go to Settings and select Focus.
Step 2: Next, tap on Focus Status.
Step 3: Turn on Share focus status.
Step 4: You will also see all the Spotlights you have set up, toggle the switch next to Favorite Spotlights.
This setting is available for both Default focus and custom focus you create. Now, when you enable selected focus, others will see that you’ve muted notifications (in supported apps).
To turn off Share Spotlight, repeat the steps above and disable the setting.
Tip: iOS 16 has brought a cool addition to Spotlight, see all about using Spotlight Filters and get the most out of it.
By default, your Spotlight status is shared with all iMessage users in your contacts and is disabled for unknown chats. As mentioned earlier, you can choose who can see your Spotlight status. Though Apple hasn’t made that step simple.
If you want to exclude a group of people, you will have to turn off the feature for each contact. I wish Apple could incorporate a favorites list or something in the next update. But for now, here’s how to do it.
Step 1: Go to Messages and select contacts.
Step 2: Tap the contact at the top to set the Focus Status.
Step 3: Here, enable or disable the Share Focus Status option.
If you don’t see this option, the user may not be using iMessage.
Tip: If you want your friends or loved ones to skip Focus Mode, you can turn on Emergency Bypass for those contacts.
You have the setting turned on but do you allow mail access to Spotlight? Although enabled by default, make sure the Messages app has access to Spotlight.
Step 1: Go to Settings, scroll down and tap on Messages.
Step 2: In the “Allow texted access” section, turn on the switch next to Spotlight.
Now, let’s check again; Your selected contacts will see your Spotlight status. If not, try restarting the device and it should be back to normal (or contact Apple Support).
Though if you’re having trouble enabling Focus Status, move on to the next section.
How to fix the display focus status is disabled
Is the Share Spotlight Status page greyed out? Well, that’s because you can’t enable it without enabling Spotlight sharing across devices. So go to Settings → Spotlight → enable Sharing across devices → then use Spotlight Share.
We hope this enables sharing of Focus Status on your iPhone. If you have more questions, check out our FAQs section.
frequently asked Questions
1. Will I still get emergency notifications with Spotlight sharing status?
When someone sends you a message, they’ll see two additional indicators, Quietly Sent and Notified Anyway. If the sender taps on Notify Anyway, it can be assumed that something is urgent and you will be notified.
2. Can you see someone’s Spotlight status if they block you?
Yes, as long as Share Focus is on, that contact can see your focus status.
3. Does Spotlight status sharing work with Auto Focus?
Whether you enable it manually or schedule Focus to turn on automatically, it follows the same rules. It will enable state sharing if the toggle for it is enabled in the Spotlight Status section.
