At some point in life, everyone needs to use their PC remotely. You can go out all day with your PC at home to download some files. Or you may have multiple computers in your home/office and need to access them without getting up.

While the Remote Desktop Connection option on Windows has existed since XP, portable solutions for iOS and Android have been lacking all these years. But it’s available now, and while it certainly doesn’t have as many features as Splashtop or TeamViewer, it gets the job done for free. You’ll need the Pro version of Windows 8 (or any of these older desktop operating systems) to use remote desktop features via the Android app. Apparently they are not available on the basic version of Windows 8. What did you say Ballmer is? A Microsoft? Right.

There is also an Android app that allows you to provide support for Android phones from anywhere in the world. Why and How to Set Up a Static IP on Your Windows Server

Windows automatically assigns your computer an IP address every time you start it up. This means that depending on the number of devices on your network, your PC’s IP address could be different every day. And MS Remote Desktop uses the IP address to authenticate the connection. So unless you want to look it up every time you restart your PC, we recommend setting up a static IP address using the steps below.

Step 1: First you access Dashboard -> Network and Internet -> network and sharing center. Here, since I am using a desktop connected via ethernet, I will see Ethernet next to the connect select. If you’re on Wi-Fi, that’s what you’ll see.

Step 2: Click on that option and select Detail.

Step 3: This window will tell you the current IPv4 address, subnet mask, default gateway and DNS server. All of those things are important. Write them down somewhere or just take a screenshot. They will be useful later.

Step 4: Close Network details box and click Property. Scroll down until you see IPv4 options in the checklist. Click on it and you will see the properties box for IPv4.

Step 5: Right now, all options are left blank because the IP address and DNS server are fetched automatically. To create a static IP, we need to change that.

Step 6: Check the option that says Use the following IP address. Remember those details we saved in step 3? It’s time to enter them in the appropriate boxes. Once you’ve done that, click ALRIGHT on all boxes and exit the settings.

Remember the IP address you enter here. This is the IP address we will use to connect to other devices. If you forget, open Command Prompt, type in ipconfig and press enter.
