Use VLC Player to Convert Videos From One Format to Another

Without a doubt, VLC is one of the most acclaimed and feature-rich media players out there. Well, of course the reason is its seamless ability to play a wide variety of files and multimedia discs but that’s not all.

Using VLC, you can do many creative things with your videos, and one of the examples we’ve seen is its ability to trim video clips. I’m sure you’ll appreciate the ease with which it gets the job done without any hassle.

Important Note: We wrote a great VLC tutorial called VLC Media Player Ultimate Guide. It is available as a beautiful one-page as well as a downloadable e-book. Make sure you check that out.

Impressive isn’t it? So today we are going to see how you can use VLC media player as a free video converter for all your media files.

Convert videos with VLC

Step 1: Launch VLC media player and click on Media -> Convert/Save.

Convert Save

Step 2: In the file tab, you will see two sections. In the first part add the file you want to convert while the second part can be used to embed subtitles in the converted converted video.

Open file

Step 3: Click the Convert/Save button when you are done. Finally, select the destination folder, give the desired file name, select the desired video profile and click the start button.

Destination file

Note: By default, VLC media player comes with a few profiles that can convert your videos to most of the widely used audio and video formats. You can edit, delete, or create a new profile using the three buttons located next to the selected profile drop-down list.

Pre-edit

You can play with various settings such as audio and video codecs to get the desired conversion profile.

Step 5: Once everything is stable, press the start button.

Now is the time to sit back and relax. The player will stream the video at twice the speed and convert it at the same time in the background.

Note: Although VLC is provided with all the necessary codecs, if you are having any problem converting the video then try to install the codec pack. The one I like is the K-Lite Codec pack.

My judgment

VLC video converter is as powerful as any widely used video converter. With editable parameters like codec to use, frame rate, bitrate, etc., VLC can certainly power most of the paid converters out there for the money. The only feature missing is the ability to batch convert videos.

So try using VLC as a video converter and share with us your experience. The comment section is waiting for you! ????
