The Skype for Windows 8 app is pretty neat. It has all that is required on a single screen. I feel the best thing about the app is how it allows you to be ready and

. This means you can receive calls even if you haven’t launched the app or even if your computer is locked. You also receive communication notifications in several ways.

The improvements certainly make it easier for you to stay in touch with people. And, it’s entirely up to you to manage these permissions and choose how available you want it to show your contacts.

Let’s take a look at the permissions that are there, what they mean, and how you can change or manage them.

Hot Tip: Users of the desktop version of Skype find the promotions and help tips quite annoying. Here’s how you can turn them off. We have another tip to help you turn off Skype sounds and notification pop-ups.

The steps are as simple as they can be. So let’s get started by launching the Skype app from the start screen.

Step 1: Swipe to the right edge of the app to launch the charm bar. Hit Setting.

Install the Skype app

Step 3: The next window on the screen will be Permission page. The privacy or permission options that can be toggled are shown below. You can drag the slider for each option to enable or disable specific permissions.

Skype App Permissions

Having said that we will try to understand what it means to turn these permissions on or off.

Webcam and microphone: No explanation for this, right? It allows the application to access your machine’s built-in webcam and microphone. And, in general, we all want that to stay turned on.

Notifications: If you don’t want any kind of notifications for calls, messages or anything, you can turn off this permission. It will keep you away from any nuisance. I usually do it when I’m busy with a personal task.

Lock screen: With this option enabled, you can also view notifications, get quick status updates, and receive calls in locked mode. Turning off this feature means that Skype will not run in the background.

Quick Tip: With lock screen access enabled, you can access Settings -> Preferences and below Privacy Choose who can text or call you. That acts as a precaution against unwanted calls.

Conclusion

Permissions here are more like a notification management system. And, it’s good to set them up according to your requirements. There are more available under Skype Options which you may want to check.
