In addition to checking out your friends’ posts, stories, and stories on the Instagram homepage, you can also flip through trending content from the Explore tab. Instagram uses AI (Artificial Intelligence) and algorithms to recommend content in the Explore tab. But it may not always be as edgy and can show irrelevant or offensive posts. Thankfully, the Facebook-owned company offers several ways to better manage suggested posts within the app.
Instagram Explore is a neat way to check out the trending posts in your region or region. But there are times when you come across unnecessary content. Instead of ignoring such posts, you can train the Instagram algorithm to stop recommending such content in the first place. Check out some options for managing Instagram recommendations like a pro.
1. Hide posts from Discover tab
Instagram now allows you to hide posts from the Explore tab. You can even select some suggested posts and hide them with one tap. You don’t have to select each post individually. After you hide posts from the Explore tab, Instagram learns your patterns and interests and uses it to hide similar posts in the future. Here’s what you need to do.
The steps to hide suggested Instagram posts vary on iOS and Android. We will cover mobile platforms. Let’s start with Instagram for iPhone.
Instagram for iPhone
Step 1: Launch the Instagram app on your iPhone.
Step 2: Select the Explore tab at the bottom (it looks like a search icon).
Step 3: Long press on the post you want to hide and select ‘Not interested’ from the context menu.
Step 4: Instagram hides posts and provides option to hide more such posts.
Step 5: Select Hide more.
Step 6: Tap the radio button in the top right corner and select some such posts to hide. Tap Done and you’ll now see fewer posts like this in the future.
Instagram for Android
Step 1: Open the Instagram app on your Android phone.
Step 2: Long press on an unrelated post and slide your finger to the vertical three-dot menu. Check out the screenshot below for reference.
Step 3: Select Not interested.
Step 4: Instagram hides the selected post and shows an option to select more such posts.
Step 5: Select some suggested posts and tap Done in the upper right corner.
It can take a while for Instagram to learn your interests. You may continue to see similar posts in the Explore tab for a few days. You can continue to hide such posts and train the Instagram app to show only relevant content. This is definitely one of the most effective ways to manage suggested posts on Instagram.
2. Hide suggested posts with specific words
Instagram has provided an option to hide comments and direct messages containing specific words. The social giant has also extended the same to suggested posts. You can add words, phrase lists, or hashtags that you want to avoid seeing in the post. Follow the steps below to adjust your privacy settings on Instagram.
Step 1: Open the Instagram app on your phone.
Step 2: Tap your profile icon in the bottom right corner and tap the hamburger menu at the top.
Step 3: Open Settings and select Privacy.
Step 4: Click Hidden word.
Step 5: Scroll to Post Custom Words. Select Manage custom words and phrases.
Step 6: Add more words, phrases and emojis that you want to hide. You can update the list at any time.
Step 7: Click Done and it will return you to the previous menu.
Step 8: Turn on the option Hide Posts.
After this, you won’t see posts with added words, phrases, and emojis.
3. Hide suggested posts from Instagram homepage
Instagram also shows suggested posts on the main menu. You can hide such posts and stop receiving similar suggestions in the future.
Step 1: Whenever you come across an unrelated post on the Instagram homepage, tap the horizontal three-dot menu next to the Follow button.
Step 2: Select Not interested to hide the post.
Step 3: Instagram hides posts and gives option to disable all posts from account and add certain words to avoid them at home.
4. Check your following accounts again
Instagram shows recommendations in the Explore and Home menus based on the accounts you follow on the social network. You need to periodically check the following accounts and unfollow those that are not needed.
Step 1: In the Instagram app, tap the profile icon in the lower right corner to open your profile.
Step 2: Click Following.
Step 3: Click the Follow button next to the account to unfollow that account.
Repeat the same for such an account and you will see better recommended posts on the platform.
Instagram shows irrelevant and inappropriate suggested posts that can ruin your mood. You can train Instagram’s algorithms with the tricks above to show only relevant suggested posts.
