Google Assistant continues to improve day by day with annual updates. Today, it works with some AI-powered smart speakers to control smart home devices. You can also control lights, fans, thermostats and other smart devices with it. One cool feature is Processes, but for some users, Google Assistant processes don’t work.
That’s inconvenient because it automates and executes many tasks with a single command. I use it daily for weather reports, calendar entries, and listening to my favorite news podcasts. So I can understand how frustrating you will be when random routines stop working.
Let’s see how we can solve Google Assistant not working issue.
1. Restart the phone
Restart your phone to see if it helps. Restarting smartphones is known to help with some app-related issues, and Google Assistant is no exception.
2. Update OS and Applications
Open Settings and tap System update under About phone.
Check if there is an update available for your operating system version. It can help fix many bugs and provide security and privacy features.
If Google Assistant is already pre-installed on your phone, it will update automatically. Otherwise, you can download the update from the Play Store.
Open the Play Store and check if there are any updates available. Just search for the app name.
Below is a list of system requirements that Google recommends before you can download and run Google Assistant.
- Android 5.0 Lollipop with 1GB memory or 6.0 Marshmallow with 1.5GB storage
- Google Apps v6.13 or later
- Google Play Services
- Minimum screen resolution 720p
Take this opportunity to update Google apps and Google Play Services.
3. Remove other AI apps
If you’re running any other AI-powered assistant app, uninstall it. Now is the time to choose. It can often lead to conflicts with individual apps trying to control settings and other aspects of the phone. Some popular examples are Microsoft’s Cortana and Amazon’s Alexa.
4. Enter the command
This is a simple trick that works for many users. Instead of saying the command to run a routine, type it. Open the Google Assistant and wait a while to see the keyboard options. Tap it to type the command.
Google Assistant will improve as you use and learn from experience to understand your voice and get better. So you will have to use voice commands as well as type some of them to speed up the process a bit.
Speak your commands in a clear voice. Maybe the Assistant can’t understand your voice commands. Luckily, there’s a way to check out all the voice commands you’ve given out recently.
5. Disable digital welfare
Digital Wellbeing is Google’s answer to Apple’s Screen Time. James M., a product expert at Google, notes that Downtime and Filters preferences can affect how Google Assistant habits work. Turn off Digital Wellbeing and try running the specific process again. If it works, you will have to stop using that app completely or uninstall it. You can send feedback to help Google resolve the issue faster.
6. Use a language
If you’re using the Google Assistant in your native language or have more than two installed, that could be the problem. Also, using one language for your smartphone and another for Google Assistant is a bad idea.
Depending on the device (phone, speaker, monitor, etc.) you’re using Google Assistant on, you can easily change the default language to your liking. In my personal experience, Google Assistant works best in English. Although there is support for other languages, some commands are faulty or wrong.
7. Reset
Perhaps you made a mistake in establishing a routine? It’s possible that a recent update might have messed up something on your phone. Remove the process that is giving you trouble and set it up from scratch. Open My Activity in your desktop browser and select More Google Activity from the left sidebar.
Scroll to the bottom of the page to find the option to delete Google Assistant habits.
Note that it will delete all routines. There is no way to delete them individually. Alternatively, disable the flow in the Google Assistant and create a new one. Open Assistant, tap your profile picture and select Processes in the Assistant tab.
Tap the process name and disable each option. Return to the previous screen and tap Add routine to create a new routine.
8. Check/Reset App Permissions
Are the Google Assistant and Google apps allowed to work properly? Open Settings and tap on Manage Apps and search Google and open it.
Tap App Permissions here and make sure all options are enabled.
Double check that Google Assistant processes are working.
9. Application data and cache
Go back to the same screen where you viewed the app permissions and tap Clear data at the bottom of the screen.
Click Clear Cache and Clear Data to remove old data that might have messed things up on your Android.
10. Remove and Re-Add Google Account
Open Settings and tap Sync to select Google here.
Click Add at the bottom to Remove the account.
Re-add the Google account and make sure all options are enabled here to allow syncing. You may have to re-grant permissions, but that shouldn’t be a problem. Check if the Google Assistant process not working issue has been resolved.
Break the habit
The Google Assistant will soon be able to make voice calls on your behalf and automatically book and book taxis. Imagine what Google Assistant could do tomorrow? Meanwhile, you can set up routines to play around with. Did we miss anything? Let us know.
