The Best PDF Tools Worth Using for a Chromebook

Since Chromebooks can’t run traditional software, they can’t do much with existing PDF files. Web-based tools will help, but if you’re offline you’re out of luck. Luckily, you have several free or no-cost options to enhance your Chromebook’s PDF handling.

Chromebook’s built-in PDF viewer

If all you need is the basics then the PDF viewer on Chrome might be all you need. It should be enabled by default. If you uncheck Always Allowed to Run chrome://plugins/, you need to right click to open the PDF file. I have my Chromebook set that way to prevent PDFs from opening automatically.

Besides just viewing the PDF, you can make some basic modifications. Since PDF creation is also part of ChromeOS, you can just extract the pages you want by printing the document to PDF. With the PDF open, select the print icon. If your destination is not Save to PDF, click Change and select that option. In the Pages section, select only the pages you want, and then click Save. You will save your PDF with only the pages you want by creating a new file. The PDF viewer also allows you to rotate individual pages.

If it’s a form, you can fill in some basic fields. Chrome won’t save your changes if you click the Save icon. Instead, you will create a new PDF file using the Save to PDF print option.

Google will perform OCR on PDF without additional software. You will need to upload the PDF file to your Google Drive. Then right click on the document and select Open with->Google Docs. That creates a new Google Doc with the transformed data.

Kami (formerly notable PDF)

We’ve covered PDF Notable before, but on Chromebooks, Kami has some great new features. This is one of the few PDF tools that work offline. With the free version (ad-supported), you can make many changes to the PDF such as adding, highlighting, underlining, and underlining over the text. It also gives you a freehand drawing tool to annotate PDFs.

Premium version adds split and merge pdf and OCR files. You can do it for free using Chrome’s built-in viewer tricks, but Kami gives you a direct approach. They also added the ability to sign PDFs and collaborate with other users.

XODO . PDF viewer and application

XODO has all the great features of Kami’s premium version like document signing and collaboration, but it’s free. The drawback is that it doesn’t work offline. I like the look on XODO a bit more. I’m used to having my tools on top rather than on the side. XODO also works on iOS and Android so you only need to learn one app.

Folia by Branchfire

Folia is an Android app that has been converted to work on Chromebooks using ARC. The free version allows you to annotate and sign PDFs. Folia has an iOS version, so you’ll sync it with other mobile devices that are using Folia. If you need to work with more than 20 PDF files, you’ll need to upgrade to the paid version.

SmallPDF

If you don’t mind being online, the previously mentioned SmallPDF allows you to do any kind of conversion with PDF. It allows you to convert Microsoft Office formats to and from Word. As the name suggests, it also compresses a PDF file. They have a bunch of extensions for individual conversions, but all of these take you to the SmallPDF website. When you find a conversion you use often, click Add to Chrome to add that link to your App Launcher.

Recommendations

Since most of these apps are free, I still get the free versions of Kami and XODO on my Chromebook. I right-click on a PDF to tell it which tool to use: Kami or XODO. I don’t need to sync my experience with Android so Folia doesn’t offer me any value.
