Taking notes in everyday life is not a strange concept. Almost all of us have done it a long time ago, some intentionally using sticky notes or table pads, and others accidentally while making grocery lists.
There are tons of tools and apps like Evernote and Memonic that we’ve talked about that help us write, save, and collaborate on notes online, but is there any harm in discussing a new product? You never know, you might like it and it might continue to replace your default note taking app. So thinking about those lines, today I want to introduce you to Zoho Notebook.
Zoho Notebook: Introduction
Zoho Notebook is another online note-taking tool from Zoho – the maker of popular online apps – that lets you create, compile, save and share your important notes online. It certainly has some neat features and, as I said earlier, has the potential to replace your current fancy online note-taking tool.

Begin
To get started, go to Zoho Notes and create an account. You can also use your Google, Facebook or Yahoo account to access if you are comfortable with that. After signing in to Zoho Notebook, you will access your online notebook, similar to the screenshot below.

By default, Zoho Notebook will contain a blank notebook with a blank page. Unlike any other note taking app, Zoho doesn’t allow writing notes right in the editor. Zoho Notebook is more like a scrapbook where you need to add each component separately.
If you look in the left sidebar, you’ll see some buttons that say Add image, audio, video, and HTML. Click the appropriate button to add an element on the notebook page to create a note. Now let’s add a text editor.
As soon as you click Add Text, a rich text editor will be added to your notebook page. You can move the text box and place it anywhere on the page. To fix the position, you can click the pin icon so you don’t accidentally move it.
To start writing, click the little edit button on the top of the editor and start writing whatever you want to note. Writing notes is like composing a new email; You can format text, change foreground or background color, add bullets, and create hyperlinks. You can also insert the tables you want.
In a similar way, you can click on other elements to add images, audio videos, or embed HTML code. You can save your notes from time to time using the save button.
If you want to print the book, you can click the print button and do the same. If you use a PDF creator like NitroPDF, you can also export your notes as a PDF document.
Zoho Notebook also has sharing options. You can share an entire book, a page, or even an individual object like a text box or photo. Just click the share button located on the toolbar and enter the email of the person you want to share your note with and the type of privilege you want that person to have on your note.
You can also create drawings in your notebook such as straight or curved lines, boxes, or callouts using the drawing toolbox located in the bottom-right corner of each page. You can add tags to your pages or audiences to make searching easier.
One feature of Zoho Notebook that I admire is the ability to create groups and the ability to chat with everyone in the group simultaneously while creating notes. Surely it will be useful for those who work in a team organization.

Now talking about portability Zoho Notebook does not impress me very much. While there are extensions and bookmarklets for Chrome, Firefox, and Internet Explorer available to clip articles on the web, for smartphones and handhelds, Zoho doesn’t currently have anything.
Also, unlike Evernote, there is no standalone client for Windows or Linux to take notes even when we’re offline and so you’ll only have to use Zoho Notes as a web app for the time being. This means that a person must have an active internet connection along with a laptop if they want to access their notes on the go.
My judgment
If you ask me, every other online note taking app is similar when it comes to writing and saving notes but what makes it unique is the extra features like portability and ease of access. If we compare Zoho Notebook with Evernote then the latter is very easy to use and you can access your notes on almost any computer, phone and mobile device out there but unlike the former, this one is not free to use and has some limitations if you use a free account.
If you are interested in collaborating with others while creating notes, then I think Zoho Notebook is a good choice.
