Neil Kinnock career
From 1983 until 1992, Kinnock led both the Labour Party and the Opposition. From 1970 until 1995, he was a Member of Parliament (MP), first for Bedwellty and subsequently for Islwyn.
From 1999 until 2004, he served as the European Commission’s vice president. Within the Labour Party, Kinnock was viewed as being on the soft left.
Kinnock was first elected to the House of Commons in the 1970 general election, having been born and raised in South Wales. Following the Conservative Party’s victory in the 1979 general election, he was appointed as the shadow minister of education for the Labour Party.
Following the party’s overwhelming loss to Margaret Thatcher in the 1983 election, Kinnock was named Leader of the Opposition and Leader of the Labour Party.
As leader, Kinnock went on to combat the left element of the party, particularly the Militant tendency, and he disagreed with the strategies used by NUM leader Arthur Scargill during the 1984–1985 miners’ strike.
Throughout the majority of Thatcher’s administration, he served as the party’s leader. When Thatcher won the 1987 general election, the party suffered its third consecutive electoral setback.
Thatcher had won an overwhelming majority once more, but Labour had enough seats back for Kinnock to continue as Leader of the Opposition after the election.
In spite of the fact that most opinion polls had placed the Labour Party ahead of John Major’s Conservative government and forecast either a narrow Labour victory or a hung parliament, Kinnock led the party to an unexpected fourth consecutive defeat during the 1992 general election.
He left his position as Labour Party leader shortly after, and John Smith won the subsequent leadership contest. In 1995, he resigned from the Commons to take a position as a European Commissioner.
Later, under Romano Prodi, he was appointed Vice-President of the European Commission from 1999 to 2004. In 2005, he was made Baron Kinnock of the House of Lords.
In addition, he served as president of Cardiff University and chairman of the British Council until the summer of 2009.
As Baron Kinnock of Bedwellty in the County of Gwent, he was made a life peer on January 28 and presented to the House of Lords on January 31, 2005.
Because of his peerage, the numbers of members of the Labour and Conservative parties in the upper house of Parliament were equal (and for a long while after that, the number of Labour members exceeded the number of Conservative members).
As a longstanding opponent of the House of Lords, Kinnock faced accusations of hypocrisy from various quarters, including Will Self, due to his acceptance of a peerage.
On April 26, 2006, Kinnock was found guilty of two speeding offenses on the M4 motorway, which runs west of London and was sentenced to six months imprisonment.
