Tragically, on October 1, 2023, Francis met his untimely demise in an aircraft accident in Lake Placid, New York, at the age of 70.

Engaged in a flight alongside Richard McSpadden, the vice president of the AOPA Air Safety Institute, they were operating a Cessna 177 departing from Lake Placid Airport when the aircraft encountered an emergency shortly after takeoff.

Despite their efforts to return to the airport, the aircraft crashed into a ravine in close proximity to the airport. The outcome was devastating, resulting in the loss of both Francis and McSpadden.

Russ Francis commenced his high school journey at Kailua High School in Hawaii and later graduated from Pleasant Hill High School in Oregon. Excelling as a javelin thrower, he set a national high school record, a feat that remained unbroken until 1988. His athletic prowess extended to being a decathlete for Pleasant Hill.

At the University of Oregon, Francis, standing at an impressive 6 feet 6 inches, showcased his skills in javelin throwing and played 14 games of varsity football. In pursuit of his NFL dreams, he completed his collegiate eligibility at Oregon State University.

Noteworthy moments in Francis’s NFL career include his time with the New England Patriots from 1975 to 1980, where he secured a Pro Bowl selection for three consecutive seasons (1977–1979). A standout performance came in 1976 when, during a victory against the Pittsburgh Steelers, he caught a 38-yard touchdown pass and accumulated a career-best 139 yards receiving. In 1980, he made significant contributions, catching passes in wins over the New York Jets and the Miami Dolphins.

Francis’s retirement from professional football occurred after the 1980 season, influenced by issues such as contractual disputes and the paralysis of his close friend and teammate, Darryl Stingley. A trade to the San Francisco 49ers and later a return to the Patriots marked the latter part of his NFL journey.

Aside from football, Russ Francis ventured into other realms, including professional wrestling and politics. He qualified for The Superstars finals and participated in WrestleMania 2’s battle royal. In 2000, he entered the political arena, challenging incumbent Patsy Mink for Hawaii’s 2nd congressional district but was unsuccessful.
