Murtaza Wahab Siddiqui’s political journey began to take shape when he was appointed as an adviser to the Chief Minister on law in the provincial Sindh cabinet of Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah on April 30, 2015. He swiftly gained recognition in the political landscape and, on May 21, 2015, was elevated to the status of a minister.
However, his political career was not without its share of challenges. A petition was filed in the High Court of Sindh challenging his appointment as an adviser to the Chief Minister and the subsequent granting of ministerial status. The petitioner raised concerns about his relatively limited experience, having become an advocate of the High Court of Sindh in June 2010. Additionally, the appointment of Wahab as the chairman of the Board of Governors of law colleges in Karachi faced scrutiny, with assertions that only the provincial minister of Education or the vice-chancellor of the University of Karachi were eligible for the post.
On November 22, 2016, the High Court of Sindh ruled that his appointment as adviser to the Chief Minister of Sindh was illegal. Furthermore, his chairmanship of the Board of Governors of law colleges in Karachi was nullified.
Nonetheless, Murtaza Wahab Siddiqui continued to make strides in the political arena. He was elected unopposed to the Senate of Pakistan as a candidate of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) on August 15, 2017. His Senate membership was set to expire on March 11, 2018.
In the 2018 Pakistani general election, he vied for a seat in the Sindh Provincial Assembly from Constituency PS-111 (Karachi South-V) as a PPP candidate. Unfortunately, he did not secure the seat, receiving 8,502 votes and conceding victory to Imran Ismail.
His unwavering commitment to public service earned him a place in the provincial Sindh cabinet of Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah on August 19, 2018. He assumed the role of adviser to the Chief Minister on law and the Anti-Corruption Establishment. His portfolio expanded further on September 5, 2018, when he was given the additional responsibility of information.
On August 5, 2021, Murtaza Wahab Siddiqui took on a new challenge as he was appointed as the Administrator of Karachi, a role that underscored his dedication to serving the city.
In the 2023 Karachi Mayoral election, he faced a significant electoral battle. Competing against Hafiz Naeem Ur Rehman for the position of Mayor in Karachi, Murtaza Wahab emerged as the apparent victor with 173 votes. The unofficial results revealed his success as the candidate from the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP). However, the announcement of these results sparked clashes between PPP and Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) workers outside the Arts Council of Pakistan, underscoring the fervor and competitiveness of the electoral process.
