Joyner began his professional radio career after graduating from Tuskegee Institute, where he was interested in radio broadcasting. Before relocating to Chicago in early 1978, he worked at different radio stations throughout the South and Midwest, including ones in Dallas and St. Louis.
Joyner began working on the morning show at WVON before leaving to work at rival station WBMX-FM. By the end of 1978, he had been hired by Charles Mootry to host the morning show on WJPC-AM. On the channel, Joyner was also the first host of the nationally syndicated newsmagazine series “Ebony/Jet Celebrity Showcase.” He returned to Dallas in 1983 to broadcast the morning show on KKDA-FM.
