Lê Quang Liêm was born in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. He has the top spot in his nati on. In 2006, FIDE conferred on him the title of Grandmaster. In addition to being the World Blitz Chess Champion in 2013, Liêm won the Asian Chess Championship in 2019.
Since 2006, he has represented Team Vietnam in chess competitions. The finest outcome came in 2012 when his team ended in seventh position, which was a record for Vietnam, thanks to his 8/10 score on board 1.
Lê Quang Liêm career
In the Under 12 division, Lê Quang Liêm took home a gold medal in the 2003 Asian Youth Chess Championships in Calicut, India.

He achieved 7/9 to win the first Dragon Capital Vietnam Chess Open, which was held in August-September. He defeated 13 players with higher ratings to win the 4th Kolkata Open Chess Tournament in September.
Lê Quang Liêm and the Vietnamese team came in second to host India at the Tata Steel Asian Team Chess Championship in December and took home the silver medal. His performance is +4=1-1 for himself.
Lê Quang Liêm took part in the Moscow Open competition in February in Moscow, Russia. He finished in a tie for first place with Konstantin Chernyshov, Evgeny Bareev, and Ernesto Inarkiev with a +5=4 performance.
Quang Liêm won the 9th Aeroflot Open at the same location just after the Moscow Open with 7/9 (+5=4), earning him a spot at the Dortmund Sparkassen Chess Meeting.
He took part in Aeroflot Open once more from February 7 to February 18 and won a championship defense. He tied for first place with Nikita Vitiugov and Evgeny Tomashevsky with a score of 612/9 points.
He competed in the SPICE Cup, the highest-rated international invitational round-robin competition in US history (FIDE category 18), from October 12 to October 21. Other competitors included Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Ding Liren, Wesley So, Georg Meier, and Csaba Balogh.
He competed in the HD Bank Cup Open, the top-rated international open competition in Vietnam, from March 19 to 24. With six victories, three draws, a score of 712/9, and the tournament victory, he went undefeated.
Quang Liêm, the defending blitz world champion, participated in the 2014 World Rapid and Blitz Championships from June 15 to June 20 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
In May 2017, Quang Liêm earned her degree with honors from Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri, in the United States. He received degrees in business and finance from the Bachelor of Arts program.
Quang Liêm competed on Board 1 for the national champion chess team while attending Webster University, winning the President’s Cup each of his four years there from 2014 to 2017.
Quang Liêm placed second with 4/7 (+2=4-1) in the second Danzhou super-grandmaster event, which featured eight competitors with Elo scores greater than 2700. He only suffered a defeat to Bu Xiangzhi. In the last two rounds, Quang Liêm defeated Vidit Gujrathi and Samuel Shankland.
Quang Liêm became the first Vietnamese player to ever win the Asian Continental Championship in Xingtai, China, in June.
Soon after, he also prevailed in the Summer Classic A event in St. Louis, United States, and the World Open in Philadelphia, United States (after a playoff with Jeffery Xiong).
Quang Liêm took part in the 2021 Meltwater Champions Chess Tour. Out of the 41 total tour participants, he finished in 10th place with a total of 30 points.
Quang Liêm took part in the Airthings Masters round of the Champions Chess Tour 2022 in February. He advanced to the quarterfinals, where he lost to Magnus Carlsen, the eventual champion of the event. Quang Liêm successfully defended his championship in the 2023 Biel Chess Festival in July 2023 with a 32.5 rating.
