Ackerman is best known as the founder of Pick n Pay. He founded Pick n Pay from just four stores and turned them into one of South Africa’s leading grocery retailers.

Ackerman and his wife, Wendy founded Pick n Pay in 1967 after buying four stores in Cape Town. The group has grown to more than 2,000 stores across South Africa and seven other African countries.

The duo retired from the board in 2010. Ackerman also pioneered other retailing firsts, including “no name” food brands and in-store banking.

The South African retail legend, Raymond Ackerman died on Wednesday, 6 September at 92. Pick n Pay confirmed the news of its founder’s demise on Thursday, 7 September 2023.

In an X (formerly Twitter) post on Thursday morning, Pick n Pay the company Ackerman founded in 1967 expressed “profound sadness” regarding his demise.

Following the announcement of Ackerman’s demise, social media platforms have been flooded with tributes to the late businessman and visionary entrepreneur.
