Recently launched Outlook.com email
was received with great enthusiasm and expectation. While some of you may have thought of giving it a try, some of you must have decided
switch over
. Others may be planning to add to the existing list of email IDs.
And then there may be many of you who already own Hotmail or Windows Live ID, in which case you can choose to switch to the new service. Migration, here really means moving from @hotmail/@live.com to @outlook.com and the process is no different than renaming your Hotmail/live ID. Your old email id still works, so you don’t have to worry about losing your emails if someone sends them to the old id.
If you notice, you can still access the Outlook.com Mail interface with Hotmail/Live ID. Go to outlook.com, sign in with hotmail or direct id and you will be taken to the new preview. From here, you can choose to change the address suffixed with @outlook. Here is the detailed process to help you do so.
Steps to change Hotmail/Live to Outlook
Like I said, you can use the new interface even without changing the address you already own. But having an @outlook.com address sounds nicer, a bit professional if you ask me, and that might be why you want to change. If so, follow the steps:-
Step 1: Sign in to Outlook.com Mail with the Hotmail or Windows Live address you are using.
Step 2: Navigate to Settings -> More Mail Settings from the top right of the interface (gear-like icon).
Step 3: This will take you to the Outlook Options page. Under the section for Manage your account you will find a link to Rename your email address. Click this link.
Step 4: Here you can choose a new email address for yourself and change the domain name to @outlook.com. Note that you are not generating a new ID through this method. Although you will have a brand new address, your previous account and configuration will appear.
The moment you click Rescue, you will have a new identifier unless it is already in use. You will log out of the interface with a success message.
Don’t worry, nothing wrong, it’s just a security measure. So sign in to Outlook.com Mail with the new email address you just created. If you try to sign in with your old ID, you will see an error message, “That Microsoft account doesn’t exist. Enter a different email address or create a new account.”
Step 5: When you log in to the new interface, you will be given the choice to link your previous account to this account, either as a new folder or with the same inbox. Choose according to your convenience.
All set up! You are now ready to use Outlook.com.
Conclusion
Migrating from Hotmail/Live to Outlook is more than just renaming your email address. Migration really means switching from some other service. If you’re planning to switch to @outlook.com, don’t forget to share your experience and any new features you come across.
