Cortana, oh Cortana. She is pretty awesome. You can ask her to search for things on the internet, ask her questions she will answer, set reminders, etc. She will also do the same things Google Now does. Gives you contextual information – about when your flight departs, or reminds you to pick up your eggs next time you’re at the grocery store.
But all of that depends on one thing – data. Your data. Your personal data. And while most of us who have used Google services accept loss of privacy as a standard (or “price”). But for those at Microsoft land, this is still an unfamiliar concept. If you want to stop Cortana from using all of your data, you can. But here, the price to pay is that Cortana will basically just give you a middle finger and turn it off on its own.
Anyway, you want it. So here’s how it’s done.
How to enable Cortana outside the US
To enable Cortana in your area, all you have to do is switch your home location to the US. You should be aware that this change will be OS-wide. But the date and time settings and the keyboard will stay the same.
Open Dashboardand choose Clock, Language, and Region.
Now click Land link.
Switch to Location tabs and words Address optional, select USA.
How to Hide Cortana Search Box from Taskbar
Enabled or not, Cortana will display itself as a search box on the Taskbar, right next to the Start button. Also, it’s important to note that Windows search and Cortana search are now the same. So even if you press window key and start typing, you’ll see a Cortana box.
If you want to disable the search box that says “Ask me anything” and want to make Cortana an alternative button, right-click the Action bar, select Cortana and choose Show Cortana icon. If you choose Hidethe icon will disappear.
You can re-enable it using the same procedure. Again, you’re just hiding Cortana, not disabling it. Just press Windows key + WILL shortcut to show Cortana anytime you want.
How to disable Cortana
Ok, here’s the big one. Looks like you’ve decided to say goodbye to your lovely Cortana. However, don’t worry, there won’t be any consequences. To her it was nothing more than algorithms and code and all.
It doesn’t matter if you decide to let her go because it’s not helpful to you or you just can’t stand all her stalking. After all, when you enable Cortana, you give it permission to track your location, what you type, browsing history, calendar, contacts, etc.
To disable Cortana, open it up and click the . button Notebook button from the left pane.
Now turn off the first option read Cortana can give you suggestions, ideas, reminders, alerts, etc.
As soon as you do that, the text “Ask me anything” in the search box will be replaced with “Search the web and windows”. The Cortana icon will be replaced with the Search icon. Cortana is now disabled.
But we still need to delete the data she already has.
Click Manage what Cortana knows about me in the cloud link. Here, from Cortana section, click Ventilation button.
Disable Bing Search
Ok, so Cortana is gone, but you can still use the same feature to search for stuff in Windows and on the web. The problem is that web searches will open with Bing in your default browser. Now, first, you’ll want to switch from Edge to Chrome as your default browser. Read how to do it here.
You will then need to install the Chometana extension in Google Chrome. This will essentially redirect any Bing search open in Chrome to Google, DuckDuckGo, or even Yahoo.
Why did you turn her off?
I mean Cortana is good at what she does, right? Why do you have to go ahead and disable her? Share your reasons in our forum.
