Manually (Offline) Update to Any Specific PS Vita Firmware

If you hacked your PS Vita to run a custom emulator (we explain how to hack yours in this section and how to install emulators in this section), then you know you can’t update your firmware. Vita’s base to the latest version. If you do, the update will break your hack and all your emulators and other homebrew apps will be gone.

Tip: If you are not familiar with some of these terms and want to know what all of this means, please refer to the post: All you need to know about hacking your PS Vita: Explanation of VHBL, TN-V, Mining, Emulator.

However, you may be interested in updating your PS Vita to a newer firmware that is not the latest firmware. This is usually done because you may want a feature or game that is only supported by that firmware. For example, let’s say your Vita is using the official firmware 3.18 and you want to update to version 3.36 (which also supports full hacks as of this writing).

However, if you update automatically, your Vita will update straight to firmware version 3.50 (current latest version) or later.

How do you update to only the firmware you want without going too far on the PS Vita?

Well, read along as I walk you through the process. And not only that, you won’t need an internet connection when updating, as you’ll have the file on your own computer.

Ready

You’ll only need a few things before you get started.

  • qCMA – An application used to transfer data between your computer and PS Vita without requiring an internet connection (available for both Mac and Windows).
  • Any application can create and edit XML files. I use Dreamweaver, but most simple notepad apps do.
  • Download the PS Vita firmware you want to install (the software you want to upgrade to) from this site (in my case I wanted to update to 3.36, so I’ll download that) .

Important Note: Also, since this tutorial uses qCMA, that means it should work on both a Mac (which I use) and a Windows PC without issue.

Ready? Start.

Locate your Vita’s update folder

Step 1: Start by opening qCMA on your computer. Once done, open the app Settingwhere you will find two tabs, Folder And Other.

Setting Q Cma1

above Other tab, make sure you have Offline mode checked and that CMA . protocol version shows your target firmware version.

Q Cma offline mode enabled

Next, on Folder tab, under Updates / Web Content section you will find the path of the folder you need to use to update your PS Vita. Locate the folder on your computer and keep it within arm’s reach.

Have the firmware file ready

Step 2: Now go to the PS Vita target firmware file you downloaded earlier. When you unzip it, you will get three other zip files.

Ps Vita 3 Firmware Zip File

From these you will only need the firmware itself, which is the largest of the bunch. In this example, it’s a zip file named ‘PSVita OFW 3.36’. You can delete or save the other two because you won’t be using them.

Then extract the Vita firmware file. The resulting file will be ‘PSP2UPDAT.PUP’.

Step 3: Now take this file and put it in Update PSV folder you set earlier. When you’re done, leave it there. We will return to this directory one last time in a moment.

Generate XML file

Since you will be updating your PS Vita via USB and in offline mode, you need to ‘command’ qCMA to get the update file from Update PSV directory, instead of searching for it on the web. For this you will need to create an XML file.

Step 4: Thankfully, much of this work is already done, as the qCMA developer has listed the necessary code on this site. Go there and copy all codes in the code window.

Q Cma update code

Also, note the filename at the top of the ‘psp2-updatelist.xml’ window (without the brackets). Because that will be the name of the XML file when you create it.

Step 5: Now open notepad, text editor or whatever application you intend to use to generate your XML file. Name your file mentioned above and then paste the code you copied earlier.

Step 6: Done? Great. Now go to the end of the code where it shows area (highlighted text shown below). There, edit all the numbers in that snippet so that they reflect the target firmware you want to update. Take a close look at the screenshot below. Check out how I replaced most of the zeros with ‘3.36’, this is the firmware I want to update.

Edited Q Cma Xml code

Important Note: If you have a PS Vita with an account in another region (such as Europe or Japan), make sure you only edit the section relevant to your region.

Step 7: Once done, save the XML file and place it in the folder Update PSV folder mentioned earlier. That folder will now have two files (shown below).

Ready? Now the last step on your computer is to start qCMA and click Refresh the database option to make sure its database is updated with the files you just added.

Now go to your PS Vita.

Step 8: First, press and hold the PS button to display quick settings. There, turn off Wi-Fi and turn on Airplane Mode. You don’t want your Vita to accidentally update to the latest firmware. Then turn your Vita off and then back on, just in case.

Ready to update Ps Vita

Important Note: After this process, don’t forget to remove the files in Update PSV folder. Otherwise, you may not be able to connect via qCMA in the future to transfer files.

And that’s it. Enjoy your newly updated PS Vita!
