No matter how large the storage space on your iPhone or iPad is, you always reach the point of running out of space. Photos, videos, and social media galleries — all combined to exacerbate this problem. While you can try to free up space by deleting unused apps, iOS usually does it automatically. Offloading Unused Apps sounds like a neat feature, but it’s not convenient in practice.
Though rarely used, finding out that an app has to be re-downloaded when you need it most isn’t good for anyone. To make matters worse, combine a massive download with mobile data and you have a recipe for disaster. Thankfully, iOS 12 lets you prevent apps from being deleted pretty easily, so there’s nothing to worry about.
But what about those cases where you don’t want anyone else to delete apps on your device? iOS 12 has a neat set of limitations to help you out, so check those out while we move on.
Disable automatic app offloading
Obviously, you must have noticed how some apps ask to re-download when you want to open them. It happens due to a process known as ‘offloading’, where unused apps are automatically deleted to free up space. Of course, this process won’t delete any related documents, files or settings, so they allow you to easily pick up where you left off.
If you don’t like iOS 12 deleting apps without permission, you can turn off automatic offloading. It only takes a few seconds to do it and here’s how you can do it.
Step 1: Open the Settings app.
Step 2: Scroll down, tap iTunes & App Store, then turn off the slider next to Offload Unused Apps.
That will prompt iOS 12 to automatically stop deleting any unused apps.
Manually offloading apps
Turning off automatic offloading doesn’t mean you can’t offload unused apps yourself when the need arises. If you’re starting to run out of space, follow these steps to free up space in a flash.
Step 1: On the iOS Settings app, tap General, then tap iPhone/iPad Storage.
You will now see a list of apps installed on your device. Tap the one you want to offload.
Step 2: Click Offload App on the following screen to delete the app. Any space listed in the App Size section will be freed.

Step 3: Simply tap the app icon on the Home screen to re-download the app whenever you want to use it again.

Restrict deleted apps
Preventing iOS from automatically deleting apps is one thing, but what about preventing others from deleting them without your permission? If you share your iPhone or iPad with kids, you might not want them to delete your apps and hide their activities. That’s where you can use iOS 12’s Screen Time limits to prevent that from happening easily.
Step 1: Open the Settings app, then tap Screen Time.
On the Screen Time panel, tap Content & Privacy Restrictions.
Step 2: Click Buy iTunes & App Store.

Step 3: Under Store Purchases & Re-Downloads, tap Remove App.
Step 4: On the next screen, tap Do not allow.
That’s it. From now on, no one can delete the app unless you explicitly choose to remove the restriction.

Restrict family member’s device
Plus, you can also choose to remotely manage the devices of any family members you’ve added as part of Apple’s Family Sharing feature right in the Time panel itself. use.

Step 1: Tap the family member’s name in the Family section.
Step 2: On the next screen, tap Content and Privacy Restrictions.
The next steps are similar to those needed to restrict app deletion on your device — tap Buy on iTunes & App Store > Remove Apps > Don’t Allow.
Once you’ve done that, the family member will no longer be able to delete the app without your permission.
It’s always good to have control
Despite Apple’s best intentions, it’s important that you do the offloading yourself. Only you know which apps you won’t really need regardless of usage. Sadly, Apple’s algorithm cannot accurately identify such things.
