Windows 10 takes a completely different approach to the operating system we all know and sometimes hate. It will be free for the first year for Windows 7 and later users. What does that mean for the second year? We don’t know yet.
But Windows 10 is trying to fix all the flaws of Windows 8. Windows 10 is truly customized for what Windows does best – productivity. Features like virtual desktops, the return of the Start menu, Cortana, and the default desktop will prove it.
The official release of Windows 10 may still be a year away, but MS has provided us with a free Technical Preview. And the best and least destructive way is to upload it to a virtual machine, as Technical Preview is not stable.
Why VirtualBox?
VirtualBox is the only good free virtual machine software available. It is made by Oracle and supports Windows, Mac and Linux. Below you will find instructions on how to install Windows 10 on VirtualBox on a Mac, but aside from installing VirtualBox, the process is the same for other platforms.
Install VirtualBox
Step 1: Go to VirtualBox’s download page and download the hosts files for Mac OS X. Once the file is downloaded, open it. This will bring up a window like below. Double-click the package to start the VirtualBox installation.
Step 2: You will see a pop-up asking for authentication. Click Continue. Click Continue button again in the main application window.
Step 3: On Installation Type screen, you can choose to install the application for all users or a specific folder. Once done, click Setting. To begin the installation process, you will be asked to enter a password.
Install Windows 10 on VirtualBox
To run Windows 10 Technical Preview, you need to subscribe to their Insider Program. Once registered, go to the ISO download page and download the ISO for your language. Record the key you are given here.
Step 1: Open the app and select New.
Step 2: Here name the machine and select Microsoft Windows in Type. Since VirtualBox doesn’t have a version selection for Windows 10 yet, choose Windows 8 32 or 64 bit, depending on the version of Windows 10 you downloaded. Click Continue.
Step 3: Allocate memory size. 2 GB is the default, but you can expand it to 1 GB if you’re running an older Mac. 2 GB is recommended since you are running the full OS here.
Step 4: Next, you will be asked to create a virtual partition. The default size is 25 GB. Select Create a virtual hard drive now and press Continue.
Step 5: At the hard drive type section, select VirtualBox Disk Image and press Continue. Choose whether the hard drive will be dynamically created or fixed size, confirm the setting and press Create.
Step 6: Now, turn on the Windows 10 virtual machine we created and specify the path to the ISO file we downloaded earlier.
Configure Windows 10 Settings
You should now see the virtual machine start up and the familiar Windows logo greets you.
Go through the wizard, sign in with your Microsoft account and cheers, you’ve got the first beta version of Windows 10 on your system.
How do you like it?
