How do you transfer files between two phones? For most of us, WhatsApp seems to be one of the most viable solutions despite its limitations. For one, you must be connected to a good Internet connection. And second, if you switch to the conventional method, you may end up losing quality, especially if it’s an image or video.
In such situations, a file transfer app is an ideal solution if you have both phones nearby.
With over one hundred million downloads, Xiaomi’s ShareMe app (formerly known as Mi Drop) is one of the popular file transfer apps on the Play Store. This app uses Wi-Fi Direct to share files between phones, and the good thing is that the feature even extends to laptops and computers.
Moreover, this interesting application is not limited to Xiaomi phones only. You can use ShareMe to move files between phones from other brands. So it’s usable with Samsung or OnePlus phones (though the OnePlus FileDash is pretty awesome too).
Therefore, in today’s post, we will see how to use Xiaomi’s ShareMe App to transfer files and data between Android phones.
Start.
When it comes to interface, Mi Drop has a clean and minimalist design. All options are right on the homepage, meaning you don’t have to search for a specific file type. On top of that, there’s a cool search box for you to search for filenames or types.
And the tiles at the top make the rest easy, as shown in the screenshot below.
Prerequisites
Step 1: If this is your first time using the ShareMe app, you need to give the app access to the photos, files, and other multimedia content on your phone.
Then there’s the usual operation of choosing your avatar and name.
While ShareMe names your device by default, it’s best to add a personal touch to that name to make it easier to find it later.
Step 2: Once you have all the permissions, tap the Send button and select the files you want to transfer. By default, ShareMe only shows installed apps and packages. However, you can also send songs, documents, and other audio files. All you have to do is browse the top ribbon.
Once you’ve selected the files, tap Send. Meanwhile, on the other phone, set the mode to Receive, after following the same setup instructions.
Alternatively, you can also tap the Scan QR Code button to scan the unique QR code. This step is often useful in cases where there are too many phones in sight. Plus, it also takes less time.
Once done, your phone will set up a local hotspot, with the files ready to transfer.
Step 3: Once everything is set up, your phone will start searching for the receiving phone. If the phone is nearby, you’ll see the recipient’s avatar on the ‘radar’. Just select it and the transfer will start at the speed of light. Okay, I went a bit overboard there, but let me tell you it was quick.
Once the transfer is complete, just click the little Cross/Cancel icon in the upper left corner to end the transfer, that’s it.
Things need to notice
While ShareMe allows you to transfer entire folders and multiple files, it does not allow you to share files and documents with multiple people at once.
Some extra features
1. Transfer files to PC
ShareMe is more than just sending and sharing files between Android devices. If you explore the app a bit, you can also move files between your phone and PC. All you need to do is connect to the same Wi-Fi network before continuing.
Next, open the left menu of the ShareMe app and select Connect to computer. The next section will show the Wi-Fi strength and the option to start the hotspot. Tap Start, select Mobile from the list, and you’ll see an FTP server at the bottom of the page.
On your Windows 10 PC or laptop, open File Explorer and enter the address. Press Enter and you will see all your phone’s files on your PC.
Then you are free to copy data between devices and delete junk folders from your phone.
The only problem with this method is that if someone has access to the FTP address, they will be able to access the contents of your phone. Of course, that means ShareMe has to be open on your phone as well, but it’s better to be a little cautious.
Therefore, when you initiate an FTP connection, be sure to select the second option (password protection). This involves the second step of setting up the network and assigning it a name and password. So anyone who connects to this network will be asked to do the same.
On your PC, all you have to do is enter your username and password to start transferring files.
2. Transfer files to iOS devices
Another advantage of the ShareMe app is that it facilitates file transfers with other devices like iPhone without using the Internet. Using this module is as easy as pie.
Open the left menu of the application and select WebShare. When selected, you’ll see a hotspot’s username and password.
Now, open the Wi-Fi settings on the receiver and connect to the network shown. Once done, ShareMe will display an FTP address or a QR code that you must open (and scan) for the transfer to complete. Neat, right?
The only problem with this process is that the speed can be a bit slow, which can be a problem in the case of heavy files.
