Someone just requires your mobile number to contact you on WhatsApp. It’s a security hole that scammers use to reach potential and target customers via WhatsApp. Before such unwanted calls ruin your work day and time, use the steps below to mute unknown callers on WhatsApp.

Silence calls from unknown numbers on WhatsApp for Android

Before you begin, update WhatsApp to the latest version from the Play Store or the App Store. Otherwise you won’t see the latest privacy option in WhatsApp settings.

Since WhatsApp uses a different user interface for Android and iPhone, we will cover both apps separately. Follow the steps below on your Android phone to mute calls from unknown numbers.

Step 1: Open WhatsApp on your Android phone. Tap the three vertical dot menu in the top right corner and select Settings.

Step 2: Select Privacy and scroll to Calls.

Step 3: Enable the ‘Silent unknown callers’ switch.

Then WhatsApp mutes calls from unknown numbers. You can still see the same thing in your Calls and notifications tab.

Bypass unknown WhatsApp calls on iPhone

WhatsApp has also implemented a similar security feature on the iPhone. Here’s what you need to do.

Step 1: Open WhatsApp on your iPhone. Go to Settings and select Privacy.

Step 2: Select Call and enable the ‘Silent unknown callers’ toggle.

That’s it. Unknown callers will not annoy you with unnecessary calls on WhatsApp. The app detects and mutes them before they ring on your phone.

Silence WhatsApp calls on desktop

WhatsApp offers capable desktop applications on Windows and Mac. You can also compose and receive voice and video calls on the desktop. While these apps have many features, you cannot mute unknown callers on the screen.

We hope WhatsApp offers the same in future updates. Meanwhile, you can adjust your privacy settings to mute all calls on the desktop.

Step 1: Open WhatsApp on your desktop.

Step 2: Click the down arrow button at the top. Open settings.

Step 3: Select Notifications.

Step 4: Enable the check mark next to ‘Mute all incoming calls on desktop’.

WhatsApp will no longer disturb you during business hours.

Silence all WhatsApp calls on Android

How often do you receive unnecessary calls from your contacts and friends via WhatsApp? You can always block them, but that would be an extreme step and could get in the way of your relationship with that person. Instead, you have the option to turn off WhatsApp call notifications.

Step 1: Long press on the WhatsApp app icon and open the info menu.

Step 2: Select Notifications. Scroll to Call notifications.

Step 3: Turn off notifications or tap Silent to receive notifications without any sound.

The same option is not available on iPhone because iOS does not support notification channels. On WhatsApp for iOS, you need to mute individual chats and in the process you may also miss important messages. We do not recommend going that route.

Most websites and services require your email address and mobile phone number to complete the registration process. When most users block unknown numbers on their phones, marketers use WhatsApp to contact you. You can always block unknown numbers on WhatsApp, but after a while it gets tiresome and marketers are smart enough to use different numbers to contact you.

Another reason could be a data breach. When one of the data breaches leaks your mobile number to scammers, they can use it to call you on WhatsApp.
