How to Increase Internal Storage in Android

While we all love our Androids, there is one notification that still torments us from time to time – low internal memory. This problem is especially common in low-cost phones, where the internal storage is mostly at the bottom. And on top of that, you have the operating system that takes up a quarter of the internal memory.

The best way to increase Android’s internal storage is to borrow it from the SD card. Yes, that can be done, but some of these conditions need to be met. And that’s the only way really. You can’t just take storage pulled from thin air and add it to a device… it has to come from somewhere and external storage is the only savior here.

Conditions for this trick to work

  • The phone must have support for external memory.
  • Android version must be Marshmallow or higher.
  • The SD card used in this process must be a high-speed class 10 SD card. This is just a reasonable point of warning – if you continue to use slow memory cards, it can slow down your Android in the long run.

1. Format SD card

The first step in the process will be to format the SD card. Make sure you back up your data before starting the format.

2. Format as Internal Memory

Post format, go through Setting > Storage and USB. Depending on your phone specifications, here you will be able to see how much space is available on your device.

Go portable storage and once inside, tap the hamburger menu in the upper right corner. A menu will pop up showing two options – View and Settings. Knock on Setting.

The Settings menu contains only a handful of options. Our weapon of choice here is the option called Internal Format. This option will erase all data from the SD card and will rotate the SD card as part of the internal storage.

The whole process takes about five minutes to complete, depending on your phone’s configuration.

Once done, you will see the device storage showing accumulated both, with the removable storage option gone.

So it will only take you a few minutes to increase the internal memory of your phone.

Since the phone considers the SD card to be part of its internal storage, unplanned removal can make the phone unstable and can cause apps to forcefully shut down.

However, not all phones have the option to modify the external storage into usable storage, such as Samsung and Xiaomi devices. So for those devices that aren’t equipped with this feature yet, don’t worry, we have a cool trick to do it.

Samsung and Xiaomi devices, stand up

First of all, you will be asked to enable USB debugging option in Developer options and install the Android Debug Bridge (commonly known as ADB tools) on the computer.

To enable Developer options, open About the page in Android settings and tap Build number 5 times until you see a congratulatory message stating that developer options are enabled.

Once everything is set up, go to the ADB shell and run the command below.

Note down the device ID from the command prompt window. So now to use the whole SD card as internal storage use below command (xxx,x is device ID).

partition disk sm:xxx,x private

That’s it, as simple as it can get. Now go to your phone and you will be able to see that both the repositories are unified and that your phone has an interesting higher internal storage.

So this is how you can increase the memory of your phone. We are not magicians and as mentioned above, this trick is only possible if only your device supports it. So don’t be disappointed when ‘low internal memory’ comes up next time, solve it with this simple trick instead.
