How to Use Stars to Organize Your Emails in Gmail

When you receive dozens of emails on Gmail daily, organizing them can become tiresome and time consuming. You can always use the default label or create a new one to organize important emails. But it won’t work in the long run. Gmail comes with another neat way to organize your emails. Here’s how you can use asterisks in Gmail to easily keep track of your relevant emails during checkout.

Adding an asterisk to an email is the easiest way to organize essential emails on desktop and mobile. In addition to adding a yellow star, you can tag emails as a blue star, test green, question purple, and even customize default options. Check it out in action.

Add an asterisk to your email

You can tap the star icon next to an email and check the same from the dedicated ‘Starred’ menu in Gmail’s sidebar. Follow the steps below.

Step 1: Go to Gmail in a web browser and sign in with your account information.

Step 2: Select the star icon next to the email.

Step 3: Click the ‘Starred’ inbox from the Gmail sidebar and check your important emails in a single place.

Use the Gmail mobile app

Gmail also allows you to star emails using mobile apps. Gmail for iPhone and Android offers an identical user interface for you to easily manage your email from your phone. Here’s how you can do it.

Step 1: Open Gmail on iPhone or Android.

Step 2: Click the star icon next to the email.

Step 3: To check your favorite emails, tap the hamburger menu in the top left corner and tap Starred.

Use different star styles

Starred inboxes in Gmail can get crowded over time. In addition to the standard yellow star, you can choose from different color options, purple question mark, red mark, green check mark, etc. Check them out.

Step 1: Visit the Gmail website in your desktop browser and sign in with your Google account details.

Step 2: Click on the star icon repeatedly and move between the types of stars in use.

Step 3: When accessing the Starred Inbox from the sidebar, you can check the different types of stars in action. It’s easy to separate them from standard starred email.

Unfortunately, there is no way to use different types of asterisks on the Gmail mobile app.

Customize Gmail star style

By default, Gmail offers four star styles to choose from. If the default options aren’t enough for you, go to Gmail settings to add more styles. Follow the steps below to make changes.

Step 1: Go to Gmail in a web browser, sign in with your account details and select the Settings gear in the upper right corner.

Step 2: Click the ‘View all settings’ button.

Step 3: From the General section, scroll to ‘Asterisk’.

Step 4: You will find the stars being used and unused from the menu.

Step 5: Drag the stars between the lists. The stars will rotate in the order shown below when you click in succession. To find out the name of a star for the search, hover over the image.

You can also choose stars from the Default Presets. Scroll down and press the ‘Save Changes’ button.

Click on the star icon repeatedly and scroll through the set styles. You can just test different types of asterisks on the Gmail screen. The same thing will appear as the standard star icon on the Gmail mobile app.

Automatically add stars to Gmail inbox

You can automatically add stars to your Gmail inbox using filters. You no longer need to manually add an asterisk to specific emails. Here’s how you can do it.

Step 1: Go to Gmail on the web and select ‘Show search options’ at the top.

Step 2: Enter email address, subject, word, etc. to filter existing or upcoming emails.

Step 3: Select the ‘Create filter’ button.

Step 4: Enable the check mark next to ‘Star’ and press the ‘Create filter’ button.

After creating this filter, whenever you receive an email that meets all the conditions, Gmail will automatically add a star and send it to the Starred inbox. You can create as many filters as you want and completely automate your Gmail inbox with the asterisks.

There are two limitations, though. You cannot create Gmail filters on mobile phones. The service will not allow you to specify other types of asterisks such as blue star, purple question mark, green asterisk, etc.
