The most secure way to lock your iPhone is by using Face ID. You can even use Face ID with a mask on your iPhone for better usability. This feature is not just convenient but also reliable enough to not make you worry about unauthorized access to your data on your iPhone.
Now, to unlock your iPhone using Face ID, you will always have to look at its screen. But what if you could unlock your iPhone without using your hands? This post will share the steps to unlock your iPhone with your voice.
Set Up and Use Voice Unlock on Your iPhone
With the release of iOS 14.6, Apple introduced the Voice Control feature for iPhones. It’s an accessibility feature that lets you control your iPhone by just saying voice commands. Until the release of iOS 14.6, you could not use this feature when your iPhone was locked. But now you can use your voice to enter your passcode and unlock your iPhone. To use this feature perfectly, we suggest using a four-digit passcode instead of a six-digit one.
Step 1: Open the Settings app and tap on ‘Face ID and Passcode’.
Step 2: Tap on Change Passcode.
Step 3: Select Passcode Options and tap on ‘4-Digit Numeric Code’.
Step 4: Enter and confirm your new four-digit passcode.
Once done, here’s how to set up and use Voice Control to unlock your iPhone.
Step 1: Open the Settings app on your iPhone and tap on Accessibility.
Step 2: Tap on Voice Control and select ‘Set Up Voice Control’.
Step 3: Follow the basic on-screen instructions to understand and enable Voice Control.
Step 4: Once enabled, tap on Commands. Then tap on ‘Create New Command’.
Step 5: Enter your custom voice command for unlocking your iPhone.
Step 6: Tap on Action and select Run Custom Gesture.
Step 7: Tap on Hide Controls at the bottom.
Step 8: To mimic the action of unlocking your iPhone, swipe up from the bottom of the screen to register it as a gesture for bringing up the password screen.
Step 9: To unlock your device, wait for 3-4 seconds and tap the areas on the screen where you think your passcode keys are located. For instance, if your passcode is 1421, you will need to tap four times on the corresponding keys. But if one digit repeats itself, you will have to tap on the same spot twice.
Step 10: Once the full-screen mode exits automatically, tap on Save at the top-right corner.
Step 11: Tap on Save again at the top-right corner to confirm.
You are now ready to unlock your iPhone using your voice. Just wake up your screen and say the custom command.
For iPhones With a Home Button
In case you have an iPhone that uses the Home Button to unlock your screen, the process to set up voice unlock remains mostly the same. The only difference is that you don’t have to tap on Hide Controls at the bottom before registering the gestures.
Edit Voice Command to Unlock iPhone
You can also choose to edit your voice command in the Voice Control menu. Here’s how.
Step 1: Open the Settings app and tap on Accessibility.
Step 2: Tap on Voice Control and select Commands.
Step 3: Tap on Custom and then tap on Edit at the top-right corner.
Step 4: Once you make changes, tap on Save at the top-right corner to confirm.
You can also delete your voice command by tapping Delete Command.
Remove Voice Control on iPhone
In case you don’t wish to use Voice Control on your iPhone, here’s how you can turn off the feature.
Step 1: Open the Settings app and tap on Accessibility.
Step 2: Tap on Voice Control and tap the toggle next to Voice Control to disable the feature.
This will not delete your custom voice command and just disable the Voice Control feature.
Use Voice to Unlock iPhone
You can unlock your iPhone with your voice in situations when it is out of your reach. This feature especially helps the elderly to operate their iPhones more comfortably. The Voice Control feature is also available for Mac users. It was added to the list of features with the macOS Catalina update. Just like on iPhone, you can use this feature to issue commands to your Mac and dictate text in documents.
