Lately, I’ve been in a bit of a dilemma with my Apple Watch. I’m always in the read receipt group because I don’t mind if people can see if I read the message or not. I am also often aware of that and make an informed decision whether to respond or not. However, as Apple Watch owners will know, the device shows you new messages as notifications but still sends read receipts.

The Apple Watch’s sensor is good, but it’s not perfect. Sometimes, I found it sent a read receipt when I hadn’t seen it, other times it sent a notification when I quickly dismissed the message before reading it. Until Apple finds a way around this, I really want to turn off read receipts on my watch but keep them on my iPhone and other devices. Turns out there’s an easy way to do this.
Turn off Apple Watch read receipts
Currently, Apple doesn’t have any settings for the Messages app directly on the Apple Watch. Instead, open the Watch app on your linked iPhone.
Scroll down to Messages and tap. You’ll see two main settings at the top: Mirror my iPhone And Customs. iPhone mirroring means that any settings from your iPhone that apply to Messages on your Apple Watch will automatically be carried over. It mimics what you set up on your phone.
After disabling this feature, you will eventually get rid of incorrectly read receipts.
If you choose Custom instead, Apple Watch lets you set your own settings for how messages work on that device. To adjust read receipts only for Apple Watch, select Customs.
An even larger list of expanded customization options. Scroll all the way to the bottom, then turn on the switch for Send read receipts. Disabling this feature is only for your Apple Watch and not on any of your other Apple devices.
After disabling this feature, you will eventually get rid of incorrectly read receipts. As much as viewing or even dismissing notifications on your watch will no longer send read receipts. In fact, there will be no interaction on your watch. Instead, the only time Apple sends read receipts is on your iPhone, iPad, and Mac if you have them enabled there.
Extra tip: Turn off message alerts instead
There’s another way to keep message read receipts accurate on Apple Watch. It’s manually turning off the alert on your watch. This only sends a read receipt when you actually open the Messages app on your Apple Watch and tap something to view the message. This isn’t practical if you want notifications, but if you don’t care about them, this still works fine.
To use this tactic, reopen the Watch app on your iPhone. Clap Notificationthen touch message. Guaranteed Customs selected again, then off Show warning.

A good alternative to easily access messages without receiving notifications is to keep a combination of Messages on your default Watch face.
