How to Transfer Playlists from Spotify to Apple Music

One of the biggest reasons why you might not want to switch music streaming services is because you have accumulated such a large library on the service you already use. You’ve probably saved hundreds, if not thousands, of songs and some playlists. Since you can’t download streaming music, switching from Spotify to Apple Music will often require starting your entire collection from scratch. But actually, that’s not true.

Some existing services have the ability to take your existing playlists in Spotify and transfer their offers to Apple Music. If you want to switch, you can continue right where you left off. One such service is aptly named Switch to Apple Music and you can follow our steps below using the app to transfer your data smoothly.

Important: The Move to Apple Music app is only available for Mac OS X 10.9 (Mavericks) and later.

Transfer playlists from Spotify to Apple Music

First, download the Move to Apple Music app to your Mac. You can choose to try it for free or purchase the full software product for $7.99. Extract the ZIP file and open the main application.

Here it will prompt you again to choose between free trial or full software product activation. The free trial will only let you import 15 songs into Apple Music. If you have thousands of songs in Spotify, Move to Apple Music is worth $8.

Next, choose Spotify or Rdio. At the time of writing, Rdio has discontinued the service acquired by Pandora, so Spotify is your only option.

You will now have to sign in to Spotify and grant the Move to Apple Music permission to access your Spotify account. When prompted, click Agree proceed with.

Finally, you can select the playlist you want to transfer.

Note: Switching to Apple Music won’t let you switch Your music collection, only the songs you have added to a playlist, starred or liked from the radio station. But an easy workaround is to just create a new playlist in Spotify, select all the songs in Your music and drag them into their own playlists. You’ll want to do this before you start transferring in Move to Apple Music.

Now things get a little weird. For the app to recognize your “iTunes Session” you need to open or restart iTunes, click Session capturein Go to My Music, then like (read: heart) any song already in your Apple Music library. Then go back to the app and the process will start.

It will scan your selected playlist for songs in Apple Music. When done, verify that you want to transfer these songs and click Continue.

Don’t worry, your music and playlists will remain in Spotify. And try to be patient—admittedly, the transfer is slow due to the complexity of the iTunes API.
