How to Take Live Photos on Older iPhones

Apple regularly rolls out a new feature that’s only found in a brand new iPhone. People see it and ask the perfectly reasonable question, “Why can’t my older iPhone do this?” One such feature is Live Photos, which can currently only be taken by iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus owners. It’s almost entirely software-based, but older iPhones can only view Live Photos and not take photos of their own. However, there is a free and easy solution to this problem available in the App Store.

A free and easy app called Live Camera is now available for iOS regardless of your iPhone model, and lets you capture Live Photos with a useful trick. You can then export it as a real Live Photo or in other formats like movies or animated GIFs.

The trick to getting Live Photos to work in Live Camera is that you won’t actually take a photo at all. You will record a video. See, when you take an actual Live Photo on your iPhone 6s, all your iPhone does is record 1.5 seconds before you press the shutter button and 1.5 seconds after for a total of three seconds.

So after you download Live Camera, all you need to do is press and hold the . button Tap to capture in Live Camera (just like you would with Vine.) Videos can be up to three seconds long, but they can also be shorter. While recording, you can also pinch two fingers in and out to control digital zoom and touch to focus.

When you’re done, you have the option to press re-recording to try again or press Rescue end. Live Camera will ask if you want to save it as a Live Photo, movie or GIF.

Tip: You can also access all previously recorded videos by tapping History

Live Photos, Movies or GIFs?

At this point, you might be thinking whether you should choose to save your photo as a Live Photo, movie, or GIF. That’s a good question, and it’s important to know the fundamental differences between the three formats, including which websites and circumstances work best with each.

Live Photos are best if you don’t plan to share them on multiple social networks. Other iPhone users can view Live Photos, but Android users can’t and neither can most social media users, at least for now. The only exception is Facebook, which recently added support for Live Photos. iPhone 6s users viewing Live Photos using 3D Touch while others without the technology have to press and hold. In services like Twitter and Instagram that don’t support Live Photos, only still images will upload.

If you want the full animation to show up in as many places as possible with the highest possible quality, choose video. Popular services like Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and Instagram all support three-second videos. This also ensures that audio is included.

Finally, if you want your animation to repeat or need it in an image file that is still shareable, choose an animated GIF. Platforms like Twitter and Tumblr support animated GIFs, as do messaging services like iMessage. They are completely lacking in sound and some picture quality, but they are fun to repeat and share with most people.
