Currently I am trying Rdio because it is officially available in my country and the packages are super cheap. $2 for unlimited ad listening and mobile offline access? Yes, please, I will have some of those.
But the more I use Rdio, the more I miss Spotify. Even if I’m on the free plan via Hola Unblocker on the web, I still prefer it because of its user interface, easier controls, better playlist support, and great plugin library.
Even the Android and iOS apps look pale compared to the Spotify apps. But one thing Rdio does on its own is native Chromecast support. Spotify seems to be working on its own standard for streaming to connected devices, so it doesn’t look like Chromecast support is coming any time soon.
But if you are an Android user, you can get the same functionality using a third-party app.
Set up Spotify
First, you need to download the Spotify app. Log into Setting and turn on Device broadcast status.
Set up Spotify
Download Spoticast and sign in with your Spotify credentials.
Select a connected and active Chromecast from Cast button in the upper right corner of the screen.
Spotify, meet Chromecast
Now that both apps are up and running, go to Spotify and start playing something. It will be played on Chromecast.
Customize Spotify settings
To the top in Setting menu by tapping the button in the bottom right corner.
Cool Tip: Turn on Auto mute. You may have noticed that when you play a song, it plays on both your device and the Chromecast. Turn on Auto mute will make sure that your device volume is automatically muted.
Spoticast is using your Spotify account details to essentially act as a third-party app. It is using Device broadcast status to see what song you’re playing, if it’s paused, and how far you’ve played. Then Spotify is streaming another copy of the song to the Chromecast.
This is why Spoticast will need you to sign in all the time. You can ask it to remember your password, but it will prompt you to say that the password is stored in an unencrypted file. This is something you really shouldn’t do.
There is also an option to Auto login if the session is saved and let Auto-launch Spotify when you’re connected to Spotify.
