How to Back Up and Copy Your iPhoto Library to Another Mac

A few months ago, when OS X Yosemite was first released to the public, Apple showed off its new Photos app. This app is intended to simplify photo management for all Mac users by emulating the look and functionality provided by the Photos app on both iPhone and iPad. However, this simplification comes at a cost: when it finally releases the Photos app, it will replace iPhoto, the legendary photo management app that’s been on every Mac by default for years.

This move is sure to be difficult for a lot of users, especially those who have been used to working with iPhoto for many years like me.

Worse still: for most of us, our photo albums hold a lot of dear memories, and like every update, there’s always the potential for problems when it’s time to switch to the new Photos app.

With that considered, here are some short tutorials on how to back up your iPhoto library in both the simple way and the not so simple way.

Backing Up Your iPhoto Library: The Easy Way

First, the good news (or bad depending on how you look at it). In a very Apple way, to keep things simple and integrated on OS X, Apple merges your photos into a single giant file that represents your photo library. But this file not only includes your photos, it also contains very important metadata, such as your events, photo stream snapshots, etc.

To find your iPhoto library, open any Finder window and click Pictures folder. There you should find it.

For manual and uncomplicated backups, all you have to do is copy the entire file to whatever destination you want. It can be a USB flash drive or a portable backup disk if you want and that’s it.

Hot Tip: If you want to transfer your iPhoto Library to another Mac, just plug your drive into it and copy your iPhoto library backup to the target Mac Photo folder. However, be warned, this will replace your current iPhoto library. So this tip is mainly targeted at new Mac owners or for those doing a clean install of OS X.

Back Up Your iPhoto Library: The Easier Way

If you want more control over what to back up from your library, there’s a way to do it that takes some digging but it’s perfect for that purpose.

For this you must access the same iPhoto Library file in Pictures folder, except this time instead of copying it right click on it and then select View Package Contents select.

Then go to masters folder. There, you’ll see several folders that categorize the different years your photos belong to.

As you open each of them, you’ll find folders for different events, albums, and dates that contain the photos as you organize them in iPhoto. There, you’ll be able to choose exactly what you want to back up and how you want to back up.

And there you have it! Now you’ll always be in control of your photo library, and most importantly, you’ll have peace of mind in case things don’t go well with the new Photos app. Enjoy!
