How to enable Do Not Disturb on Android

Enabling Do Not Disturb on Android is as simple as tapping an icon. However, to access that icon, you’ll need to use the Settings and Quick Settings menus on your Android device. Follow the steps below to do that.

Put your phone in Do Not Disturb mode from Settings

Step 1: Open Settings on your Android device.

Step 2: Scroll down and tap Sounds.

Step 3: Here, tap on Do Not Disturb.

Step 4: Then, tap on ‘Turn on now’.

This will immediately bring your phone to DND. If you want, you can also immediately tap ‘Turn off now’ to turn off Do Not Disturb on your Android device.

Set up Do Not Disturb from Quick Settings

Step 1: From the top of the screen, drag down the Quick settings menu with your finger.

Tip: Edit Android’s Quick Settings panel if you don’t see a Do Not Disturb box in the options.

Step 2: Here, click Do Not Disturb.

How to Customize Do Not Disturb on Android

So to prevent this from happening you can enable DND for a certain amount of time, then post it will automatically turn off. Here’s how to do it.

Step 1: Open Settings and tap Sound.

Step 2: Then tap Do Not Disturb.

Step 3: Scroll down and tap Duration.

Step 4: First, select the duration option.

Step 5: Then use the – and + buttons to adjust the DND duration. Please note the duration is in hours.

Step 6: Once done, tap OK.

Accordingly, this will change Android’s Do Not Disturb settings and set the DND for the selected time period.

How to add DND exception on Android

Now, when Do Not Disturb is enabled, it will block all incoming calls, event notifications, and reminders. However, there are provisions that allow you to add exceptions using the Do Not Disturb setting. This is the way.

Step 1: Open Settings.

Step 2: Here, tap on Sound.

Step 3: Then, tap Do Not Disturb.

Step 4: Go to the Behavior section first and tap on ‘Sound & Vibration’ and Notification Options to adjust the behavior settings for DND.

Step 5: Then scroll down to Exceptions and tap on Calls. This will ensure DND does not block calls to exempt numbers.

Step 6: Here you can add contacts to allow calls, activate calls from Starred Contacts, and even allow unscheduled calls if it’s a repeat caller.

Step 7: Alternatively, you can also set exceptions for Messages and reminders. To do this, return to the Do Not Disturb settings page.

Step 8: Here, tap on “Messages, events & reminders”.

Step 9: Now use settings to set exceptions and allow certain notifications, reminders and event notifications to appear even when DND is enabled.

How to Schedule Do Not Disturb on Android

Setting up a DND enabled schedule on Android helps automate the process. This way DND will only turn on at specific times and with set specifications. This is especially useful if you are working or sleeping at a set time and want to turn on DND often. You also have the option to create a custom DND schedule to better suit your needs. Follow the steps below to do that.

Step 1: Open the Settings menu and tap Sound.

Step 2: Here, tap on Do Not Disturb.

Step 3: Now, scroll down to the Schedule section and tap on ‘Turn on automatically’.

Step 4: Here you can use one of the pre-provided schedules. To do this, tap the schedule you want to enable.

Step 5: Then toggle the switch for ‘Use Rules’.

Step 6: Once enabled, you can now set the date, start time and end time for this scheduled DND.

Step 7: Alternatively, you can also enable the option ‘Alarms can overwrite the end time’ to make sure you don’t miss the alarm. Although, for certain devices, the alarm may ring regardless of whether DND is on or not.

Do Not Disturb will now automatically turn on according to the date and time set in the schedule.

Create a Custom DND Schedule on Android

If you don’t want to use the available schedule options, you can also create a custom schedule. This is the way.

Step 1: On the Do Not Disturb settings page, select the ‘Turn on automatically’ option.

Step 2: Here, tap on Add Rule.

Step 3: Then give the rule a name and tap ADD.

Step 4: Now use the settings to set the date, start time and end time for DND.

Step 5: Enable the ‘Alarm may overwrite end time’ switch if you want the alarm to pass DND. However, the alarm may still pass regardless of whether this setting is enabled or not.

A new schedule will now be set and DND will automatically turn on at the specified dates and times.
