How to Set Tab Stops in Microsoft Word

In Microsoft Word, the cursor will skip some spaces if you mistakenly press the tab key on your keyboard. The omission of some spaces occurs because of the default tab stops present in your Word document. The tab stop is where your Word cursor stops after pressing the Tab key.

In Word, Tab stops are often used to evenly space text. That’s as opposed to pressing the spacebar multiple times to split text to create space between words or numbers. How to create tab stops with Microsoft Word ruler

The Microsoft Word Ruler has a number of uses, including help in creating tab stops. Here’s how it works:

Step 1: Press the Start button and type from to search for apps.

Step 2: From the results that appear, click on the Microsoft Word application or document to open it.

Step 3: On the Home tab, click the Show/Hide button ¶. Clicking the ¶ button ensures you can see the hidden punctuation and formatting in your Word document.

When you see a dot (·), it represents a space, while a dash (¶) represents a paragraph, and each arrow (→) is a tab.

How to create tab stops with Paragraph Dialog Launcher

You can also use the Paragraph dialog box launcher to create tab stops. This allows you to create multiple tab stops. Here is how it works.

Step 1: In the open Word document, click the Home tab on the Microsoft Ribbon at the top of the screen.

Step 2: On the Home tab, click the dialog launcher in the bottom right corner of the Paragraph group.

Step 3: In the bottom left corner of the Paragraph dialog box, click the Tab button.

How to remove tab stops with Paragraph Dialog Launcher

You can remove tab stops on your Word document with the Paragraph dialog box launcher. Here’s how to do so:

Step 1: Open the Word document and click the Home tab on the Microsoft Ribbon at the top.

Step 2: On the Home tab, click the dialog launcher in the bottom right corner of the Paragraph group.

Step 3: At the bottom of the Paragraph dialog box, click the Tab button.

Step 4: In the text box below the Tab Stops location, you will see all your tab stops. If you only want to remove a tab stop, click the tab stop location.

Step 5: At the bottom of the dialog box, click the Delete button if you are only deleting one tab stop. If you want to remove all tab stops, click the Clear All button.

Step 6: Click the OK button to close the dialog box after removing your tab stops.
