Forgetting a password can be really annoying. You are locked out of your account and can’t access anything unless you reset your password. While most services allow you to easily reset your password, changing the administrator password on Windows 10 can be a bit of a hassle.
If you forget your Windows administrator password, there is no way to access the system. That makes resetting passwords even more difficult. If you are in such a situation right now, then you have come to the right place.
In this article, I will show you three ways you can reset your administrator password on Windows 10 and regain control of your account and computer. So jump right in and change that nasty password you seem to have forgotten.
Reset Windows 10 admin password online
If you are using a Microsoft account on a Windows 10 system, you can easily reset your administrator password online. To do so, simply go to the Microsoft website, click sign in and then click on the Forgot my password option.
In the next page, enter your recovery email account or phone number and click next.
You will then have the option to select the recovery account for which you want to receive the reset code. Select the recovery account of your choice, enter the code, then choose a new password. Simple isn’t it?
Reset Windows 10 administrator password using command line
Now if you haven’t signed in with a Microsoft account, things might not be that simple for you. However, there is still a way to reset the admin password. If you have access to another account on the same system with administrator privileges to run PowerShell or Command Prompt, you’re in luck.
Follow these steps to reset the administrator password using the command line:
Step 1: Sign in to the standard account, right-click the Start icon, and then select the Windows PowerShell (Admin) option.
Step 2: In the PowerShell window, type “net user” (without the quotes) and press enter.
The command will list all user accounts on the system, including the administrator account.
Step 3: Now type “net user ACCOUNT NEWPASS” (without quotes) and press enter.
Replace ACCOUNT with your administrator account name and replace NEWPASS with the new password you want to use.
Note:
Step 4: If you follow all the steps mentioned above to the letter T, you will get the message “Order completed successfully”. reminder.
That’s it, you have successfully reset the admin password. Return to the login screen and enter the new password to use the administrator account. Please note that this method will only work if you have administrator privileges for PowerShell.
Reset Windows 10 administrator password with password reset disc
If none of the other two methods work for you, then you can reset your Windows 10 administrator password using the password reset disc. The only problem with using this method is that it will require some foresight on your part.
That means it will only work if you have pre-created a password reset disk for a situation like this. Follow these steps to reset the administrator account password using the password reset disk:
Step 1: Enter incorrect password on Windows 10 login screen and press enter twice. Then in the next screen click on the option to Reset Password with the password reset disk connected to your system.
Step 2: Click Next in the Password Reset Wizard to begin the process.
Step 3: In the next window, select the password reset disk from the drop-down menu and click Next.
Step 4: Now enter the new password in the given text box, confirm the password and add a new hint. Then click Next.
That’s it, you have successfully reset the Windows 10 administrator password on your system. Be sure to keep that password reset disk as a precaution for any future mishaps.
If none of the methods mentioned above worked for you, then you are probably locked out of your system forever. I strongly recommend creating a password reset disk to avoid such problems in the future.
How to create a password reset disk
If you don’t know how to create a new password reset disk, follow these easy steps:
Step 1: Open Legacy Control Panel using Windows key + run R command, type control, and then click OK.
Step 2: In the control panel, click on User Accounts.
Step 3: Click User Accounts again in the following screen.
Step 4: Now click on the Create password reset disk option in the left column to open the setup wizard.
Step 5: Click Next in the first Forgotten Password Wizard window.
Step 6: In the next screen, select the drive you want to use to create the password reset disk and then click Next.
Step 7: Enter the current account password to authenticate the process and click Next.
Step 8: When the progress bar reaches 100% in the following window, click Next and you are done.
You now have a password reset disk to help you conveniently reset your admin password should you ever forget it in the future. Just make sure you keep the disk safe because if someone else takes over the disk, they will be able to reset your password and access all your files.
