You have an iPhone 6s with 3D Touch and you’ve been experimenting with your shiny new device just like me. Live Photos in particular are pretty cool. When this feature is enabled, your iPhone will take 1.5 seconds before and 1.5 seconds after each photo you take. Then, when you go back to the Photos library to view your photos, they’ll animate for those three seconds as you 3D Touch on the photo. It’s like some weird, futuristic function where all the photos are secret short videos.
You show off the Live Photos you took to friends who don’t have iPhone 6s yet. They were surprised, just like I was. They ask you to send them pictures. Uh oh… that’s when things get a little complicated. Since Live Photos requires 3D Touch to view and 3D Touch is only available on iPhone 6s, only 6s users can experience Live Photos? Um, yes and no.
Send photos directly from iPhone 6s to iPhone 6s
This isn’t a long section because sending photos directly from an iPhone 6s to another iPhone 6s is basically the same as anything else. For example, if you want to send a photo in iMessage, go to Messages or Photos and insert the photo. At first it won’t animate like an animated GIF.
On the same front side, recipients will only see a standard photo when they receive it, except for the word “Live” marked in small print. That’s how recipients know they can press firmly on the photo to trigger 3D Touch and see the Live Photo animation.
Send photos directly to other Apple devices
You can also send Live Photos to almost any other iOS device running iOS 9, they’ll just create a slightly different effect. On these other devices, a small circle will appear at the top of the photo, indicating that the user can press and hold the photo (but not 3D Touch) to play the Live Photo animation.

Note: On any device other than iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus (or later), you won’t be able to actually take Live Photos — just view them.
The Apple Watch Live Photo watch face will animate when you raise your wrist. You can also set animated Live Photos as wallpaper on your iPhone 6s to later play with 3D Touch.
On a Mac, OS X El Capitan supports Live Photos in the Photos app. If you have a Mac that’s compatible with a Force Touch trackpad, you can Force Touch the photo to play the animation.
Live photos in third-party apps
iOS 9.1’s Live Photos API will also allow third-party app developers to incorporate Live Photos in their apps, according to Apple’s developer toolset. This means that if you’re using Facebook, you’ll be able to view Live Photos in the Facebook app or have the ability to edit Live Photos in Pixelmator. Of course, it’s up to the developer to incorporate the required APIs to make this a reality.
In iOS 9, Live Photos only works in Apple’s own apps. Don’t get your hopes up about Live Photos coming to Android. With the iOS API, Google is very welcome to enable Live Photos in its iOS apps, but Apple will doubt that Apple will allow Android users to enjoy the fun on the iPhone 6s.
