Task Scheduler is a built-in application that comes with Windows 10 OS and you can make the most of it to schedule different tasks. Here’s how to use it to schedule automatic shutdown of your computer.
Step 1: Enter Board plan in your Windows 10 computer’s search bar and tap Task Scheduler.
Step 2: In the Actions section, click Create Basic Task.
Step 3: Give the task a name, description (optional) and click Next. For this tutorial, we will name the task – Auto Shutdown at 12AM.
Step 4: Choose how often you want the action to be performed and click Next. That’s how often you want to automatically shut down your PC. It can be Daily, Weekly, Monthly etc. It can be a one time task.
Step 5: The next step is to choose a start date and time you want your PC to automatically shut down.
Step 6: On the new window, select Start a program and click the Next button.
Step 7: The next thing to do is choose a program to activate your PC to shutdown. Click the Browse button.
Step 8: Navigate to the button of the page, select the shutdown application and click Open.
Step 9: Enter -S in the Add arguments (optional) box and click Next.
Step 10: Preview the automatic shutdown task on a new window and click Done.
Then your computer will automatically shut down at the specific time you set in the Task Scheduler. If Daily in Step 4 (above), your computer will automatically shut down daily at the set time.
Override scheduled auto shutdown
Let’s say you want to continue using your computer even though you have scheduled an automatic shutdown. In that case, you can override or temporarily end the auto-shutdown task so that whatever program you’re running on your PC doesn’t work.
Here’s how to override the auto-off action you enabled earlier on your Windows 10 PC.
Step 1: Launch the Task Scheduler app.
Step 2: On the application dashboard, click ‘Task Scheduler Library’.
Step 3: In the task window, find and select the automatic shutdown task you created earlier.
Step 4: Next, you can override the intended action. In the Actions section, tap the Finish option to override the action.
After that, the task will no longer run at the set time, i.e. your PC will not shut down automatically.
Alternatively, you can temporarily disable the action by selecting Off in the Actions menu. That will temporarily suspend the auto-shutdown task. In case someone else is using your computer, you do not need to remove the automatic shutdown task. You can just disable it. Reactivating the task is also easy — just launch the Task Scheduler, select the task, and click Enable.
Modify the automatic shutdown command in Windows 10
If you have previously set your PC to automatically shut down but now want it to shut down at a different time, all you have to do is edit the instructions. Here’s how to get it done.
Step 1: Launch Task Scheduler app and select ‘Task Scheduler Library’.
Step 2: Right-click on the auto-off task you want to edit and click Properties.
Step 3: Navigate to the Activation section of the new window and tap Edit.
