How to Restore iPhone Using IPSW File When Getting Errors

I use a jailbreak on my iPhone to unleash all the awesomeness of my iPhone. It’s nice to use tweaks and hacks that make my device stand out from the rest. But the only dark side is the lack of OTAs. Every time a new iOS update is released, I have to manually restore my iPhone through iTunes.

However, while updating to iOS 9.2, I get error 1667 and don’t know what that error means. Even the iOS support page is out of use. I mean, tips like Update your OS, Check if the USB is plugged in correctly not what I was hoping for.

I did a lot of research and then I came to the conclusion that sometimes you have to bend the rules to get the job done. And, this time, I will manually flash the operating system for my iPhone. To my surprise, it worked without any errors. So here is a step by step guide on it.

Restore iPhone with an IPSW . File

Step 1: First thing is first. Do a full backup of your iPhone using iTunes and make sure that you choose a backup location to your computer and also include the apps in the backup. This will make sure you don’t waste bandwidth restoring your iPhone. In case you want to be extra sure, you can also create an iCloud backup.

Step 2: Make sure that your iPhone is charged at least 70% and look at the back of your iPhone for the model number. Now open this page and check if your phone is GSM or Global Model. Having done that, go to IPSW Download and download the latest IPSW file for your iPhone.

Step 3: Now, select the device and iOS version you want to download. Make sure you only download signed firmware from here as they can only be restored using iTunes.

Step 4: The download file size can be around 1.5 to 2 GB. After downloading, restart your phone and connect to iTunes again and wait until the device is detected. Open the iPhone management page on iTunes and then press and hold Change to click Restore button.

Step 5: Holding down the shift button will give you the option to select the IPSW files you downloaded from the web. After you select the file, iTunes will start the recovery process and the phone may boot up several times during the process.

Warning: Please do not disconnect your phone from the computer until the process is complete and you see the welcome screen on your iPhone.

If you still get the error, put your phone in DFU mode and then try to restore using iTunes. DFU mode restore should be a last resort and you can check out this guide on how to put iPhone in DFU mode in the first place. It can be difficult to put your phone into DFU mode, but if you follow the instructions, you should be able to do it after 2 to 3 attempts.

Once your phone is restored to the latest iOS version, reconnect your phone to iTunes and restore the backup you created in the first place. All your contacts, apps, messages will be restored. Simply put, your iPhone will be back to the way it was only on the latest iOS version and no jailbreak required.
