I love Skype and use it frequently to connect with family and friends via video conferencing. Everything about Skype is great except for one thing. The annoying icon stays on the Windows taskbar as long as you are logged in, using unnecessary real estate out of the limited available.
On top of that, it doesn’t understand the meaning of red close button on the program. Any other normal program will close or minimize to the system tray, but Skype loves the taskbar and won’t leave it easily. So let’s see how you can get rid of the annoying taskbar icon and minimize it to the system tray using Skype options.
Remove Skype icon from taskbar
Step 1: Launch Skype and click Tools—>Options to open Skype preferences.
Step 2: Navigate to Advanced settings section and uncheck the option Keep Skype on the taskbar when I’m signed in and save the settings. You can also remove the Skype watermark that appears during a call.
That’s it, from now on Skype will understand the meaning of the close button and will minimize the program to the system tray when you perform the operation. If you want to close Skype completely, you can do this using Skype’s context menu in the system tray.
