How to Remove Background From an Image on iPhone

The background can be removed from the image even on the phone. While you can use Canva to remove the background from your iPhone photos, it’s still a third-party app. Apple changes that with iOS 16. Photos app can easily remove background from photos. You can then share the edited image with anyone.

We tested this feature on an iPhone 13 running on iOS 16 Public Beta. The Photos app is also available on iPad, so the solution steps in this post work on iPadOS 16 and later.

What is the benefit of this feature

Imagine someone taking a selfie of you or a photo of the scene you took. While the obvious solution is to crop the image, sometimes that’s not ideal. The part you want to remove from the background can be people, animals, or objects. However, the iPhone will allow you to remove the subject and remove the background entirely. That means you can focus on the person, animal, or object in the photo and use a different background.

Some free sites claim that permission for you after two clicks, but you can never be sure about their privacy policy and the security of your photos. Also, those sites aren’t very effective at separating the background from the image. With iOS 16, you can do the same thing without letting the photo leave your phone.
