How to Mute and Unmute Participants in Microsoft Teams

Quick Tips

  • To quickly mute a specific participant, hover over their name in the participant’s list, click More options, and choose Mute participant.
  • You can prevent attendee mic mayhem by disabling the Allow attendees to unmute option in the participant list under Manage audio and video.

How to Mute All and Individual Participants

On Desktop

Step 1: When on a call, click on the participants’ icon at the bottom. You will be shown the list of participants.

Step 2: To mute an individual participant, hover your mouse over their name and click on the three-dot icon. Select Mute participant.

On Mobile App

Step 1: When on a call, tap on the screen once to reveal the options toolbar.

Step 2: Then, tap on the participants’ icon at the top.

Step 3: On the next screen, tap and hold the participant’s name you want to mute. Then, select Mute participant.

Step 4: To mute all members, tap on Mute all.

How to Stop People From Muting Other Participants

Note: The role of the Organizer cannot be changed. Only the Presenter or an Organizer can change the role of others.

On Desktop

Step 1: In the ongoing meeting, click on the participants’ icon at the bottom.

Step 2: Click on the three-dot icon next to the person’s name whose role you want to change.

Step 3: Select Make an attendee from the menu. You must do this separately for each member.

On Android and iOS

Step 1: Tap on the participant’s icon at the top of the ongoing meeting.

Step 2: Tap and hold the name of the participant whose role you want to change.

Step 3: Select Make an attendee.

FAQs

1. How to know who is muted?

If you are on a desktop, you will see the mute icon next to the participant’s name during a call. If you can’t see all the participants, tap on the participants’ icon at the bottom.

2. Can you disable unmute for others?

No. You cannot stop people from unmuting themselves during a group video call.

3. How to unmute participants in Microsoft Teams?

You can neither unmute all or individual participants. The participants need to unmute themselves.
