One of the most important things you do to make your YouTube channel popular is to improve the channel page. And if your content is blank or doesn’t reflect the overall aesthetic of your channel, you should change it immediately.
If you’re not sure where to start, don’t worry. In this article, I will show you how to create an awesome YouTube banner using Photoshop to add personality and style to your channel. So no need to advertise any more, let’s get to it right away.
Download YouTube Channel Image Template
Now, to create a great YouTube banner, you need to know its exact size and how it will appear on different devices. While you can easily search for sizes online, aligning everything so that the banner looks good across devices can be a bit tricky.
That’s why I created a simple template that you can use to create your channel without worrying about alignment. Download the template (shown above) from the link below and open it in Photoshop to follow my instructions.
Customize YouTube Channel Image Template
Now that you have downloaded and opened the template in Photoshop, just follow these simple steps to create a simple yet awesome banner for your YouTube account.
Step 1: Create a new layer using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+N.
Step 2: Fill the layer with the background color of your choice using the keyboard shortcut Shift + F5 and choose a color from the color picker.
I’ll be using Guiding Tech’s trademark colors and you can choose any color you like. Personally, I would avoid YouTube colors. You want your banner to pop out, not blend in with the YouTube UI, right?
Since the solid background looks a bit boring, I will add a gradient to the background using the gradient tool.
Step 3: Select the gradient tool, then choose your foreground and background colors by clicking on the little colored squares at the bottom of the left toolbar.
Step 4: Now left click on one edge of the canvas, hold the click and drag your mouse to the other edge and release. That will add a gradient of your choice going from point to point.
Again, I have preferred our brand colors, but you can choose whatever you like. You can even try with the direction of the gradient.
Next, we’ll add the channel name and logo (if applicable). Make sure to add all important information in the innermost rectangle marked by the instructions. That will ensure that no content is cut off when someone opens a YouTube channel on a device with a smaller screen.
Step 5: You can add the channel logo by dragging and dropping the file into the background and using the Horizontal Type tool to add any other text you want to add to your banner.
Here, I used the GT logo and added our channel description using the type tool. You can adjust the font and size of the text by adjusting the Type Layer Properties in the panel to the right.
Now that we have the logo and text, let’s add some cool graphics to the banner. If you don’t have access to any graphics, just search for free photoshop graphics pack on YouTube and download one.
Then open the graphics pack in Photoshop and follow these steps to apply some cool elements to your banner.
Step 6: Select the graphic you want to install by clicking on the layer and then duplicating it with the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + C.
Step 7: Go back to your banner and use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + V to paste the graphic into your banner.
Step 8: Use the Transformation tool (Ctrl+T) to adjust the size and alignment of the graphic. Since the class I’m using is a bit sparse, I’ll duplicate this to add more elements.
Step 9: To duplicate a layer, right-click on it and select Duplicate Layer option from the pop-up menu.
Step 10: Now, I will use the Transformation tool on the duplicate layer to move the elements around until the banner looks a bit easier to see.
Once you’ve finished the layout for your YouTube banner, you can save it as a .png file by using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+S and choosing .png from the Save As type drop-down menu.
Now that you’ve saved your banner as a .png image, it’s time to upload it to YouTube.
Follow these steps to upload your YouTube banner:
Step 1: Sign in to your YouTube account, go to your channel, and then click the Customize Channel button.
Step 2: In the next screen, click the Add Channel Image button at the top.
Step 3: Upload your YouTube banner in the next window by clicking on the Choose a picture from your computer button and selecting the PNG file you just saved.
Once the file is uploaded, YouTube will let you know how your new banner will look on desktop, TV, and mobile devices. Check that everything is ok and use the Adjust Crop button if you want to make some small changes.
You can even check the Auto Enhance option if you want YouTube to make some subtle improvements to your banner. When you’re happy with the results, just click Select and you’re done.
Now that you know all the basics to create a YouTube banner, I’m sure you can create an awesome banner for your channel. The tool I created for this tutorial is pretty simple, but you can use some of the other tools in Photoshop to make your tools stand out.
