How To Look Up Fonts on Websites on Desktop and iOS

Letter 414953 640

When I looked at the first draft of the design for our new E-Book and Ultimate Guide, the first thing I asked myself was “what is that title font?”. It’s sleek and modern, but still has a journalistic serif feel (spoiler: that’s Raleway).

Now, I could ask the designer what font it was but that wouldn’t suit my overbearing ego. So instead, I used an extension to look it up for you. An extension that lets you avoid human contact? I can tell you are already intrigued.

You can do this from desktop browsers like Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and now from both your iPhone or iPad running iOS 8. How? Read to find out.

Find fonts on the desktop

WhatFont is a Chrome and Safari extension that scans the source code of the page and tells you the font in question. And most of the time, it gets it right. If you’re a Firefox user, check out Font Finder.

Here’s how the app works: you download the extension, grant it permissions, activate it, and leave it in the extension bar.

Now, when you are browsing a page and come across a font that you want to know its name, click the WhatFont button.

Now, just hover your mouse pointer over the text and the extension will immediately tell you the font you want to use. Click on it and the bubble will expand with a font preview, font family, size, and even line height.

WhatFont for Safari on iOS 8

Believe it or not… iOS 8 already supports extensions. Action extensions are supported by browsers like Safari. This means that iOS, a self-contained system, has access to a library of extensions, albeit a small one, before Android. That, I didn’t expect. Anyway, here we are. If you also know how to do this on Android, please let us know in the comments.

On iOS, download the WhatFont app. It won’t do anything by itself. You will only see instructions on how to enable the extension. So go to Safari, tap the . icon Share and in the bottom row, slide all the way to the right and click Than. From here allow What font?.

Now, in Safari, open the page in question, tap the screen, and drag it over the text with the font you want to define.

Click Share button, select What font?and a screen with detailed information about the font is displayed. Here you will see the font family, font type, and even font size.

What is your favorite font?

I type Menlo Regular but would rather read Avenir Next or just plain old Helvetica. I’m also a fan of the fonts used in Instapaper like Tisa, Georgia, and Lyon. How about you? What is your favorite font? Let us know in the comments below.
