I have been learning about the Xiaomi Mi 4 review unit for a while now. During use, I noticed that the screen would shrink to the bottom left or right edge of the phone. I almost thought this might be a bug until I found out that this is one of the new features of MIUI 6, the Android ROM this device runs on.
Once enabled, this feature will shrink the screen to the bottom left or right edge for easy one-handed operation on the device. So if you’re sipping coffee or carrying your bag with one hand, you can still use your large screen devices with ease and reach all four corners with one hand. My research tells me that is also a default feature in some large screen Samsung devices.
One-handed mode on Android devices
Those who are using a large screen device like the Nexus 6 and want to try one-handed operation can use an Xposed module that mimics these features on any rooted Android. This trick only works on rooted Android with Xposed framework installed.

Install OneHand Xposed Mod Mode and reboot the device.
Now, to configure the app, tap Settings for the app and turn on One-Handed Mode. If you are left-handed, fill in the right and top margin values and right-handed people should fill in the left. Please don’t give too big a value, because you’d better choose a value below 150 from the start. You can also choose from pre-made presets to make things a little simpler.
The same applies to the settings for Notification Center. However, the changes on the notification center are only visible when you drag it down.
Currently, this trick does not apply to the keyboard, but if you are using Swift Key there is a way. You can press and hold the Swift Keys setting and enable the small keyboard that shrinks and sticks to either side. A great combination until developer OneHand comes up with a fix for the keyboard and notification center.
Apps can be pinned to the notification center and provide the option to enable or disable functionality for apps, notifications, or both right there. Using this feature, you can easily switch modes while using any application. The premium version of OneHand Mode offers the ability to specify per-app settings and blacklist certain apps.
Conclusion
The app does its best to reflect this feature, but is a bit slow to present. Unlike MIUI 6 or Samsung devices, you won’t get jet black borders in unusable areas. Instead, you’ll see your device’s wallpaper at the edges unusable. Give the app a try and see if it really makes a difference to how you handle your big-screen Androids.
